We were walking the dirt road from his farm to the main square of the nearby village. On the way, I asked him if he believed in Martians, a term by which any evolved alien life form was interpreted at the time. When we arrived at our destination, after having sat down at a table outside the only bar present, equipped with ice creams and soft drinks, he looked at me seriously and said, in his Polesan dialect: "The Universe is so big that we don't know where it ends , if it ends. If only we are the intelligent ones, it means that we are the pinnacle of intelligence. Look at the people in the square, does it seem possible that they are the best?" A practical answer from a practical man. My deduction then and now is obviously not! Let us limit our speculations to biological life forms only. I believe that any biological expression, somewhere around us, overcoming various critical steps, has given rise to an evolved civilization, be it mammals, reptiles, insects, plants, etc. Like us, many others feel the urge to know what is "fluttering" around them and compatibly with the available technology, they go along with it. History teaches, except for catastrophic events that cause traumatic setbacks and regressions, the exponential power of technology. It follows, keeping us cautious, that in a hundred years we will be able to move quite easily within our potentially colonized solar system. Another hundred years and we'll start to smell that "air is blowing" in those nearby. If I could go back to that Sunday in July, to a later question, my grandfather would answer: "Does it seem possible that what we have is the maximum technology available in the Universe?". This long premise is intended to speculate on how ready we are to change our normal view of life from "island" to "oceanic". I use these terms considering the Earth as an island in the ocean of the "cosmic void". It is no coincidence that in future space carriers the crew will use the ranks of the current navies, both military and civilian. “Official” contact will inevitably happen; one of the future critical steps. I think it is highly probable that even now there are many "curious" who are taking a look at us. The reason why they do not appear and/or are not revealed can be debated for a long time and the reasons can be multiple and complementary. In my opinion a certain factor is our peculiar characteristics. The challenges that the Universe poses are also exponential and the answers must be up to the task. Unity is strength, we verify it every day. A union of different races, to which we can assign the term federation for convenience, can provide these challenges with alternative and, at the same time, complementary resources, thanks to their peculiarities. This last characteristic, I believe, is our best insurance in future "diplomatic relations": the specific vision of the problems that our race can offer, despite all the limitations that distinguish us. Black hole near Earth: What will Happen According to Scientists We have said it many times, but it is really worth repeating: the black hole is one of the most mysterious and at the same time disturbing celestial bodies that scientists have been able to observe in our skies. No wonder, then, that the presence of one of these enigmatic and impenetrable elements "lurking" in the universe has aroused not a little hype. What does "lurking"mean? Just what we imagine: the recently observed black hole is located in an area of space not too far from Earth and, until now, had gone unnoticed. Revealing its presence was the death of an unfortunate star, violently sucked by its gravitational field. The Mysterious Glow in the Sky and the Black Hole Hypothesis But what exactly happened?
