Salutations! I am Carl Ian Samson (District 1) and I am running for a seat in the Second Parliament of our great and mighty Space Nation of Asgardia. Today, I present my campaign rationale. My bid for the Parliament is built on a singular focus: Bring Asgardia closer to attaining international recognition. This milestone, I believe, will be the foundation of all future initiatives of our nation in fulfilling its goal of establishing a thriving community in space. Alshamsi et al. (2018) note that “the competence of Asgardia regarding its territory is tied to a recognition embraced by the world community.” For this recognition to materialize, the authors identify two (2) tests that Asgardia must pass: (1) subjective and (2) objective. The former, they argue, is more difficult to achieve: “The subjective test, while simpler, is the more difficult, and as so, it is better to address that one first. It begins with a question: will the founders be able to convince the world that Asgardia is a true nation? Though the objective test of international law should answer this question, subjectively, the politics of society could first get in the way. Thus, this subjective test is the first obstacle that Asgardia must overcome.” We have already made progress in the objective test, which requires fulfillment of Article 1 of the Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States (1933): (1) a permanent population, (2) a defined territory, (3) government and (4) capacity to enter into relations with the other states. For this reason, my campaign sets its eyes on passing the subjective test. In essence, the subjective test requires Asgardia to — sans rigorous, quantifiable and/or clear-cut criteria — prove its status as a sovereign and independent nation. In his 1985 article “Dreams and Realities: The Future in Space,” Dr. John Logsdon, founder of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University and former member of the NASA Advisory Council, describes seven (7) factors that must favorably converge for accomplishing a large-scale program, such as setting up a base on the moon. These include: (1) the specific political context; (2) the visions, values, and styles of individuals in key leadership positions, particularly the president; (3) the ambitions and needs of the organization that would carry out a proposed program, particularly as interpreted by the leaders of that organization; (4) the ambitions and needs of other organizations that view themselves in competition for the same share of limited national resources required to carry out the program under consideration; (5) the outcome of earlier programs of the same character; (6) program success not only in technical terms but also in political terms is essential to approval of any “logical next step”; and (7) the program choices available, their technical, budgetary and political characteristics, and their potential payoffs. I have come to use these factors as bases of my policy. Over the next few days, I will release my five-point plan to help bring Asgardia closer to attaining international recognition. Through the fulfillment of this plan, we will set up the right political conditions for Asgardia to assert its status as a sovereign and independent nation — all for the rest of Earth to witness.
