The mythology and folklore of indigenous people is often written off as exactly that – legends and parables used to remember elders and teach younger generations lessons about morality. But what about a tribe whose lore gives a precise location of astronomical bodies and phenomena that aren’t discovered by modern science for hundreds of years? The Dogon are that tribe, and they have known for centuries that their ancestors are descendants of a species from the Sirius star system eight and a half light-years away. Knowledge of the Hidden Star Sirius B The Dogon inhabit an area of Mali called the Bandiagara Escarpment, a stretch of sandstone cliffs nearly 100 miles long, reaching up to 1,500 feet high. Taking advantage of the area for its natural protection, the tribe built their homes on the side of the cliffs during the 3rd century B.C. and have remained there since. But it wasn’t until the 1930s that French anthropologists discovered their strangely advanced astronomical knowledge, despite maintaining a very primitive lifestyle. Although the Dogon live in an area more than 2,000 miles from Egypt, they have a history that appears to have some intriguing connections with its famed, ancient lineage that hinted at some connection to the stars. Upon studying the Dogon tribe, anthropologist Marcel Griaule learned of their obsession with the Sirius star system. While Sirius A is visible to the naked eye, its companion white dwarf, Sirius B, was not discovered until the 1950s with an advanced telescope. The Dogon, however, were well aware of its presence, as well as its orbital period, describing its existence before it was confirmed years later. The Dogon are incredibly familiar with the system, where a race of beings from Sirius was purported to have traveled from, imparting their knowledge upon the tribe hundreds of years ago. These beings, known as the Nommos, were amphibious beings, coming from the same star system as the Egyptian god, Isis. The Dogon also claim that there is a third star in the Sirius system that has yet to be discovered, and gravitational observations might prove their claim to be true. Were the Dogon visited by spiritual beings or ancient astronauts? Or did the anthropologists who first studied them carry out an elaborate deception by giving them astronomical insight to regurgitate in front of a camera? Knowledge Preceding Modern Science Carl Sagan weighed in on his take of the Dogon tribe and their supposed celestial cognizance by disavowing the idea that it could have come from otherworldly beings. The Dogon were aware of Jupiter’s moons and Saturn, along with its rings, but Sagan said that their lack of awareness of any other planets in our solar system was evidence that they were only reiterating a few pieces of knowledge given to them by their interaction with French anthropologists. However, Sagan’s cursory analysis of the Dogon did not touch upon the fact that their knowledge of the Sirius star system was represented in 400-year-old artifacts, nor did he acknowledge their understanding of subatomic particles and their theory of the universe’s creation that was similar to the Big Bang. The Dogon were also very aware of our location within the Milky Way Galaxy and knew of the state of Sirius B, being an incredibly dense and dying star. This curiosity also led them to make further discoveries regarding human anatomy, long before Western discoveries were made. So, who were these Sirius Star aliens that this enigmatic tribe met more than 600 years ago? The Dogon refer to them as the Nummos or Nommos, beings that were mostly aquatic, but were also mobile on land. They appeared only to a small sect of the Dogon tribe, because extensive contact with humans would have a negative impact on their well-being. In some accounts, the Dogon speak of the Nommos as being non-physical. Every 60 years, when Sirius appears between two mountain peaks marking a cycle in its orbit, the Dogon hold a celebration, called Sigui. Leading up to the celebration, the younger men of the tribe sequester themselves from the rest of the group for a few months. During this time, they speak in a secret language. Sigui itself can last for long periods of time; the most recent celebration lasted six years. During these celebrations, the Dogon’s knowledge is passed on to future generations, but there is supposedly secret information regarding their knowledge that has not left the tribe. Strange connections with other civilizations Amphibious, god-like beings appeared in other ancient cultures outside of the Dogon. Ancient civilizations from Babylonia to Greece, and even Slavic nations depicted aquatic beings in their mythology. One interesting connection that some have drawn with the Dogon is that of the Dogū in Japan. Alternative theories point to statues of the Dogū, whose name is similar to Dogon, that resemble an astronaut or being in a spacesuit. The Dogū are thought to have arrived in flying ships, bringing written language and many aspects of civilization to the Japanese. Interestingly, in ancient Mesopotamian lore there is a deity known as Dagon or Dagan, depicted as a merman or fish god – this depiction can also be seen in the Hebrew Bible. But the Dogon’s connection with Egypt is the most intriguing, and an argument in their defense from the criticism of Sagan and pragmatists. The language that the Dogon use to describe the Sirius star system consists of ancient Egyptian words that have not been used for centuries. Other similarities between the two cultures can be seen in the way they organized their civilizations, such as the creation of an upper and lower kingdom and a 360-day calendar. In fact, sports is an important economic sector in modern society. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) such as Europe’s Galileo constellation, as well as Earth observation data and satellite communications provide a considerable amount of applications for sports activities. The Initiative took shape in 2016 with the . The conference was to identify the innovation potential space can generate for outdoor sports, especially through satellite applications targeted for this market. With the recent launch of the “Satellites for Sports” series, the Space 4 Sports Initiative has become a full-fledged thematic area. The series aims at promoting satellite applications for the sports sector. The objective is to showcase and boost the versatility of satellite-based data for a diverse set of sports, both at professional and amateur level, by bringing together different stakeholders such as service providers, sports clubs, and sports federations. This setting should lead to a better understanding of how and why satellite technology is deployed in the sports sector, from the identification of barriers hindering its uptake to discussing the options for relevant decision makers and regulators within the space and sport sectors. Over recent years, sport as an industry has been particularly receptive to new developments in technology and analytics. Wearable technologies have diversified, both at a professional sports science level and in the consumer fitness market, while broadcasters have to keep up with new trends and the increasing public’s interest in sports. Whether for active participation or passively following as a spectator of sporting events, sport has become a growing factor in Europe’s economy and society! The different episodes within the Satellites for Sports series showcase the versatility and great potential of satellite-based data for a diverse set of sports, both at professional and grassroots level. Satellite imagery provides geographical (e.g. elevation, route conditions, sea state) and environmental (e.g. weather, air quality, temperature) information relevant for sports activities and the performance of athletes, as well as for planning, operations and condition based maintenance of sport facilities and equipment (e.g. golf courses, ski slopes, virtual platforms). Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), in combination with wearables or integrated sensors, offers reliable performance data. These systems allow to track the activity of individuals, equipment, vehicles, and animals, as well as to support the geo-localisation of and routing to events and facilities. Satellite communication enables the provision of connectivity, e.g. enabling live transmission of sport events and communication within or to remote and sparsely inhabited places, securing the safety of athletes at all times. Technology and satellite-based data set foot on all levels, from grassroots clubs to the elite professional athletes. Türkiye to host world's largest space congress in 2026 Türkiye's dedication to space exploration garners recognition from prominent figures in the field, with ambitious goals set to reach the moon by 2026 and enhance the nation's global space presence. The scenic resort of Antalya on the Turkish Riviera will host the 77th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in 2026, the country's industry and technology minister has announced. "Türkiye won the race, and Antalya will host the world's largest space congress in 2026. May it be beneficial to our country and nation. This is our shared success and source of pride," Türkiye's Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacir said during a technology event on Friday. Stressing that everyone who believes in Türkiye's future can make great contributions to such successes, he said science, research and development, innovation, and entrepreneurship all play important roles in scaling even more heights in the decades ahead. "The awareness of space among the Turkish people and our young people will increase greatly. Türkiye also aims to reach the moon in 2026. We will crown this step with the congress. The Italian fashion house will work to design the suits alongside another private company, Axiom Space. In a press release, Axiom said Prada would bring expertise with materials and manufacturing to the project. One astronaut told the BBC he thought Prada was up to the challenge due to their design experience That experience has been built not only on the catwalks of Milan but also through Prada's involvement in the America's Cup sailing competition. "Prada has considerable experience with various types of composite fabrics and may actually be able to make some real technical contributions to the outer layers of the new space suit," according to Professor Jeffrey Hoffman, who flew five Nasa missions and has carried out four spacewalks. But he said people should not expect to see astronauts in "paisley spacesuits or any fancy patterns like that. Maintaining a good thermal environment is really the critical thing". "A spacesuit is really like a miniature spacecraft. It has to provide pressure, oxygen, keep you at a reasonable temperature," he added. Earlier this year, Axiom unveiled a spacesuit, which it said would be worn on the upcoming Artemis 3 mission. The suit weighed 55kg and was said to be a better fit for female travellers. In a press release, Artemis and Prada said they would use "innovative technologies and design" to allow "greater exploration of the lunar surface than ever before". The Artemis 3 mission, featuring the Prada designs, will follow Artemis 2, which will involve flying a capsule around the Moon late next year or early in 2025. A NASA astronaut will finally spend a full year in space "I'm really excited to see how my body does when I return." Eleven days before Christmas last year, a micrometeoroid struck a Soyuz spacecraft docked to the International Space Station. This ruptured the vehicle's cooling system, creating a dramatic spray of coolant for hours into space before there was none left. Prior to this accidental strike, NASA astronaut Frank Rubio had been planning to come home by around spring break of 2023 to see his wife, Deborah, and four children. For his debut spaceflight, six months in space was enough for the former helicopter pilot and flight surgeon. But eventually Russian and US engineers determined that the Soyuz spacecraft that he and two Russian crewmates—cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin—had flown to the space station may not be safe for the return journey home. The crew compartment was likely to overheat. So that damaged vehicle was flown home without anyone on board, and a replacement Soyuz flew autonomously to the station.
