Hello all, I'm a specialist of lab automation and I think that we will face with lot of difficulties during medical lab automation. There are few: - Liquid dosage. Most actual devices use gravity force to drop liquids into tubes during dispensing. If we will not be able to use gravity we must develop some new approach to automation of liquid handling (it is not only about medical or sci labs, but about lot of liquid handling systems - e.g. coffee machine also use gravity to dispense coffee into the cap).

  • Since all equipment weights a lot, we must consider 3D printing of such devices. But as soon as we decide to do that, we must keep in mind that some of lab instruments must be very precise. So we need VERY precise 3D printing technology. I thought about improvement of 3d printed ingot by slicing it with laser. It could be quite precise in some cases.

  • TopicStarter mentioned CRISPR/Cas technology, and it is really cool thing, but we must understand that all genetic engineering requires a lot of reagents, especially native proteins (e.g. polymerase for PCR). Since we couldn't have production of native proteins at space (only in perspective), we will be bound by shipment from Earth. Medical diagnostic sometime must be fast, any delay could possibly lead to death. We must not face supply-block in reagents and drugs. Since, we must develop an automate system to control Storage, to check quantities of drugs and reagents, to make a prognosis for items consumption. I think it could be solved via neuro-algorithms and networks.
