Asgardia is electing its mayors, and today we are continuing our series of interviews with the election participants. We will talk with the different candidates for mayor from different countries around the world. We do not specifically select candidates to be interviewed; any candidate who would like to tell about themselves and their campaign to the entire nation of Asgardia has now this opportunity. Contact us via email at firstname.lastname@example.org, with the subject line "interview" and your interview can be the next one. Today we glad to introduce to you Mr.Sajjadul Islam - the candidate for Asgardia’s mayor from Dhaka, Bangladesh.
- Tell us about yourself. Who are you? Why did you decide to become a resident of Asgardia?
I don't feel I can explain who I am to you from my own perspective as I am sure others might see me differently. Anyway, I’ll try.
My name is Sajjadul Islam. My father was a freedom fighter in the liberation war in 1971 and my mum was city area president. My entire family as far back as I can trace has always participated in governmental activities as far back since 1965 in Dhaka city and join the liberation war in 1971 of the declaration of the president of Bangladesh Shek Mojibar Rahaman for independence.
My family was very proactive in our country. I always felt that I had a calling to also go that extra mile and also do something proactive to aid and support our rapidly developing First Space Nation.
I believe that to make further existence of the human race possible we need to leave this planet and venture out into space to colonize other worlds, create new civilizations and to visit places our species has never seen before. To achieve that we need to start somewhere.
Yes, we have to start somewhere, it’s just as important as knowing that we have to finish what we started. Hand in hand these two things will help us succeed as the First Space Nation.
So many reasons why I decided to become a citizen of Asgardia. Sometime later, maybe in person, I would be glad and honored to talk about those. But right now I’ll just state the underlying purpose of why I’m doing this and that is because I believe not only in Asgardia’s mission and ideas but also in its people. They are putting it all together because they realize the importance of the successful growth of our nation. A nation where people can help and support each other as a team is undoubtedly moving in the right direction.
- Why have you decided to run for the position of Mayor?
I decided to run for the sake of my region in Asgardia. For many reasons but a lot of them are very similar in nature and eventually, it all comes down to taking responsibility. I feel a responsibility to do everything I can to make humanity better and build a more peaceful world, in this case, build a better Space Nation.
I also believe that I have what it takes to be an effective leader in this situation, that I have a talent of having a cool head under stress. I possess skills that an average person doesn’t have. I am confident I can make use of my knowledge more effectively if I get elected. I can do more for more people by becoming a mayor because of what I know and what I can do with my belief in "The Right Tool For The Job." I am passionate about what I do and when doing something I engage in it with all I have.
- What contribution do you hope to make to your local community during your tenure as mayor?
I have in mind many activities:
Promoting local businesses and local handicrafts.
Developing a healthy community using public holidays and other gatherings alike for moral support of well-being.
Sponsoring youth sports teams both independently and within educational organizations.
Setting up charities throughout hat can be helpful in building and stabilization of Asgardia.
Holding contests for designing a flag or local T-shirt for business logos and symbols as a way to boost the morale of the Nation.
The purpose of all these things is to encourage awareness and creating a culture of contributing personally to the development of our community.
Sponsoring events is a great way to get people together and spread the word other about what’s going on in the community. It also provides an outstanding platform for people who have never met before to get to know each other. I’ll organize a mayoral office to keep people updated and to give them a place where they can come to have their problems solved and their needs addressed. I’ll keep a record of all Asgardia-related activities and new Asgardians in my region. I’ll establish a city for all Asgardia can stay together and create a peaceful community. This community must have medical, legal, educational, emergency management and industrial facilities.
All Asgardians will pay taxes to keep those running.
I want to make sure that my mayor office is also known as the community office open for every Asgardian.
- What problem are Asgardians in your district(city) facing and what would you do to help?
As I a said I want to make sure that my mayor office is also known as community's office that plays a unique role of being a place where our people can talk actively about situations and topics that may sometimes be lost in the media. I’ll also help with cases when local citizens think some of the events don’t get enough media coverage. I’ll make sure to communicate what they want to hear from their own elected official's.
Being able to talk to your citizens is as crucial as what you say to them.
A problem for citizens in many areas is their belief they don't hear enough from their own local officials and only hear from those in the head office.
Many citizens value a more locally-based approach and feel comforted knowing that there is no need for oversight by higher authorities when local officials can do what they were elected to do
- In your opinion, what are the most interesting projects that can be carried out in the future by the space nation of Asgardia?
The most important thing that can be done right now is to create a free and unrestricted society that embraces knowledge, intelligence, and science and realizes the ultimate value of each human life. The central objective is to always maintain peace in space and protect the welfare of humankind.
I believe Asgardia should aim to achieve a balance of general Space, planetary and its own National.
For example, Asgardia still has to get approval from the UN to be officially recognized. That is a critical step.Anna Grigg
