Parliament holds the First Digital Session

The Parliament of Asgardia sits for its first digital session on 10th-12th of October 2018 (3rd-5th of October 0002). This is the Parliament's first major sitting since the parliamentary session in Vienna on the 24th of June 2018 (07 of Asgard 0002).

Parliament has spent the previous months forming the twelve Committees and commencing their Parliamentary activities. The finalisation of the list of Committee Chairs and Deputy Chairs was recently announced. With the Chairs and their deputies in place, Parliament has all the tools it needs to work on the Nation's legislation.

One of the defining factors of this Session, setting it apart from the Vienna conference and conventional Governments, is that it is held in the digital space.

Asgardian Members of Parliament (AMPs) connected from all over the world and from different time zones to take part in a live video-conference.

As a large decentralised organisation, Asgardia's Parliament must find a suitable way of working and, indeed, one of the first items on the agenda is the Rules of Procedure of Parliament. These broadly outline how Asgardian Members of Parliament conduct their work together.

Sessions are set to span over the various time zones with three eight-hour sittings:

10TH OF OCTOBER 21.00-05.00 CET

11TH OF OCTOBER 13.00-21.00 CET

12TH OF OCTOBER 05.00-13.00 CET

The sittings are private, meaning that members of the public may not watch the proceedings at this early stage. Citizenship Committee Chair Mr. Ben Dell commented that he is “looking forward to sorting out the mechanics of the plenary - as that hopefully means we can get the format right to allow open sessions, which would strengthen our democracy.”

Parliament is tackling some crucial issues impacting the Nation during the sessions – amongst them the Citizenship Law which, if passed, will contribute towards Asgardia’s self-sufficiency and inject resources into the Space Nation's economy.
