British Power Company, Ecotricity, is now Providing the World’s first Vegan Electricity
Ecotricity, a British power company is now providing what it has dubbed the world’s first vegan electricity, after warning that animal products can actually be found in other sources of electricity.
The renewable energy provider based in the U.K. has just revealed that its electricity and gas would be certified vegan after it claimed half of the British homes are powered by electricity made from animal byproducts. Dale Vince, the company’s founder, accused companies that consider themselves “ethical” or “green” of not being upfront with consumers when it comes to that part of their product.
In a statement, Vince explained that he wants clear labelling of energy sourcing so that people can make informed choices.
Ecotricity provides “vegan energy” in the wind and solar power, and it’s currently working on “sea power,” which is produced by wave oscillation and marine currents. Although none of the company’s electrical sources had animal byproducts that the company knew of before it made the announcement, they still registered with the Vegan Society to ensure their animal-friendly status.
Even though we often don’t hear about it, it’s actually quite common for power companies to produce electricity from animals through anaerobic digestion. In the process, facilities heat animal manure, which generates methane gas that is then used to fuel generators and create electricity, as reported by Dairyland Power Cooperative, a Midwestern electricity provider.
However, typically animal waste is considered a clean, renewable energy source. By turning manure into fuel it gets rid of a large chunk of carbon pollution and reduces power companies’ reliance on “dirtier” fossil fuels such as coal and oil, where frackers need to drill into rock to extract it. Additionally, animals offer a limitless supply of waste, while Earth’s natural gas stores are not infinite.
Once anaerobic digestion occurs, farmers can use the liquid remains of the manure as fertilizer and make chips for animal bedding from the solid leftovers, explained chemical engineer David Simakov to Popular Science.
Simakov said we are talking about producing the amount of renewable natural gas enough to heat thousands of homes from just a single large landfill site. We need to stop pumping carbon from underground into the atmosphere and start caring about introducing more and more renewable energy to make our lives more sustainable.
As of now, renewable energy only makes up 11 percent of energy consumption in the U.S., as per the Energy Information Administration. Fossil fuels and nuclear energy produce more than 80 percent of the country’s electricity. Although anaerobic digestion is still more expensive than the more common sources of energy it could be a worthy investment.
