Sci-Fi Sunday, Jan 12-19 2020

It’s that time again, we have some of the top sci-fi news of the week! Picard gets renewed, AppleTV series casting notice, Jared Leto looks to finally have a comic book movie to be proud of, new Westworld trailer shows some of how it got there, and DC Universe Stargirl received a season trailer.

Star Trek: Picard was renewed for season two ahead of season one premiere

Just one week before it premieres its first season, CBS All Access confirmed that the series has been confirmed for a second season. The Hollywood Reporter also claims that early work on season three has been given the go-ahead, to allow for back-to-back production.

The executive VP of originals at CBS All Access' Julie McNamara said: "The energy and excitement around the premiere of Star Trek: Picard has reached a magnitude greater than all of us at CBS All Access could have hoped for. We’re thrilled to announce plans for a second season before the series’ debut, and we are confident that Star Trek fans and new viewers alike will be captured by the stellar cast and creative team’s meticulously crafted story when it premieres on Jan. 23.”

Also in the news is that Star Trek Picard showrunner, Michael Chabon will exit the series halfway through season two due to a new deal to produce an original series for companion network Showtime. He will be replaced by 12 Monkeys alum Terry Matalas who, according to the release announcing the renewal referred to Matalas only as exec producer, though sources say he is the likely eventual showrunner.

So it looks like we’ll be getting quite a bit more of the series in the years to come!

Will you be watching Star Trek: Picard when it premieres on January 23?

Sony Pictures Entertainment released an amazing trailer for Marvels ’Morbius’

Hold onto your hats and hunker down for this three-minute-long trailer for ‘Morbius’! Starring Jared Leto, Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson the trailer gives us a look at what this movie is going to be about but without giving to much away.

Official synopsis:

One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease.

Still, with the controversy on whether or not Sony can use the MCU characters in its movies, the trailer shows Michael Keaton in a role that may or may not be his ‘Vulture’ character from ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’. We also get to see in the background a reference at the 2:10 mark when Morbius is seen walking by a street art painting of Spider-Man that has "murderer" written over it.  Which may mean the events of the movie take place after “Spider-Man: Far from Home”

Where ever it takes place, there are high hopes that this movie will offer Leto his second chance at the superhero genre and play true to the cult favourite comic character.

Morbius will swoop into cinemas on July 31. 2020.

HBO released a backstory heavy trailer for ‘Westworld’ season three

HBO released a trailer that shows us a timeline that leads up to the beautiful dystopian future that has been shown in the series so far. With the impeachment of the 45th president, a second civil war breaking out in Russia, and ecological disasters around the world seem to be a central focus we may have been given a glimpse as to why the park was such a popular escape for humanity.

Most of the main cast will be returning, including, Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores, Thandie Newton as Maeve, Ed Harris as the Man in Black, Jeffrey Wright as Bernard, Tessa Thompson as Charlotte, Luke Hemsworth as Stubbs, Simon Quarterman as Lee Sizemore and Rodrigo Santoro as Hector Escaton. Fans can expect to see some new faces this season such as Aaron Paul, Vincent Cassel, Lena Waithe, Scott Mescudi, Marshawn Lynch, John Gallagher Jr., and Michael and Tommy Flanagan.

‘Westworld’ was adapted for TV by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. It is based on the film of the same name written by Michael Crichton.

Nolan revealed that he pulled inspiration for the new season from ‘Blade Runner,’ the 1982 Ridley Scott film. Though, Nolan did say he wanted to take a different spin on the season, saying:

“Dystopia can look pretty beautiful in the world. Just because the world is corrupt inside, doesn’t mean it can’t be smothered over and pretty. We wanted to find a version of dystopia that we hadn’t seen before.”

Sunday, March 15 will see the premiere for the third season of ‘Westworld.’ with eight episodes.

AppleTV+ series ‘See’ adds Dave Bautista to the cast in season two.

Deadline this week had an exclusive scoop that Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista will be joining the cast of AppleTV’s original series ‘See’. Bautista is well known as Drax in the Marvel Studios movies, most recently ‘Avengers: Endgame’.  Last year, he was also seen in the action movie ‘Escape Plan: The Extractors’ and on an episode of ‘What We Do in the Shadows‘ and he was heard in the animated movie ‘My Spy’.  In 2020, he will appear in Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune‘, and Zack Snyder’s ‘Army of the Dead‘.

‘See’ takes place in the distant future, after a deadly virus decimated humankind. Those who survived emerged blind. Momoa stars as Baba Voss — the father of twins born centuries later with the mythic ability to see — who must protect his tribe against a powerful yet desperate queen who wants the twins destroyed.

In addition to Momoa, Bautista joins returning cast Alfre Woodard as Paris, Hera Hilmar as Maghra, Sylvia Hoeks as Queen Kane and Christian Carmago as Tamacti Jun.

The series also includes cast and crew who are blind or have low vision, who helped bring authenticity to the world.

DCUniverse ‘Stargirl’ received a new season trailer

Hot on the heels of ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ cameo on the final moments of CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths, Warner Brothers, DC Universe, and The CW have rolled out ‘Stargirl’s latest trailer.

According to sources, the Crisis clip depicted the titular teen hero, a.k.a. Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger), along with her towering mecha companion S.T.R.I.P.E., who is secretly her stepfather Pat (Luke Wilson), and her new team, the Justice Society of America– Doctor Mid-Nite, Hourman, and Wildcat, although the actors playing them are currently unknown.

In the trailer, we get a better look at her journey to becoming Stargirl, some of the villains she may be facing in season one, and some of the backstory for the new Justice Society of Earth 2. Will we be seeing some of the characters already set in that universe such as Jesse Quick and her father Harrison Wells and some of the iconic Flash villains still remains to be seen. However, this new offering within the CW superhero universe offers a fresh look at an under-appreciated hero, will expand the universe in new ways and bring in a younger audience that will be introduced to the DC Television universe to carry it forward for many years to come.

Supergirl is set to debut sometime in the Spring of this year.
