Too unsafe, it could create an unforeseen man made meteor impact, it would be too stupid to create something like that, what we need is a pre impact shield. Something like a massive wall of steel that is compact enough to deflect incoming meteors by a certain angle. These shields should be able to couple and decouple/have their own propulsion systems and be able to connect and disconnect in the event of failure and should be able to organise them selves into a wall of varied thickness, imagine ping pong.
