As of late, researchers discovered that there is a gigantic quantity of water on the Moon, hiding underneath the surface. Since these initial discoveries, specialists with the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado have found confirmation that this water is widely distributed all across the Moon and is there during both the lunar day and the lunar night .

Yet, they also saw that the water appears to exist mostly as OH (a reactive hydroxyl molecule, instead of H2O) and may not be easily accessed. These findings are published in the journal Nature Geoscience .

These findings could provide researchers with a better understanding of the origins of this Moon water and how it came to be distributed as it is. In addition, the information could also be a useful asset for future missions to our lunar satellite.

Furthermore, as an ever increasing number of organizations and companies investigate the likelihood of going back to the Moon and setting up a lunar base , this water could possibly be utilized as drinking water or even to be transformed into rocket fuel by splitting apart hydrogen and oxygen.

These findings directly oppose our earlier understanding of water on the Moon. Previously, researchers believed that the water formed primarily around the poles. Moreover, the water signal they were watching appeared to change with the Moon’s day and night, leading them to initially conclude that the water was moving.

Nevertheless , there is still some debate about the location and behavior of the water because of the subtleties of the signals from the remote, infrared-sensing instruments employed to support this study’s claims.

Beyond this discovery’s potential to deepen our knowledge and our ability to live on and use the Moon as a resource, it could also enable scientists to gain a better understanding of how water may exist on other rocky cosmic bodies. As we seek exoplanets, it can be hard to concretely observe the conditions of their surfaces. It’s possible that remote sensing instruments and new methods of analysis, such as those used for this study can enhance such observations even from afar.

Ranging from name brand to boutique,  the company is indexing the ingredients of thousands of skincare products. EpigenCare’s matching algorithm will then select the ingredients that epigenetically impact the consumer’s tested skin quality indicators in a positive way. Thereafter, the ingredient selections are checked against the product database for the skincare products that have the prime ingredient composition, which is then shown as recommendations in the consumer’s skincare test report. EpigenCare will provide the first direct-to-consumer test that contains specific, actionable results.

The company’s web platform dubbed “The EpigenCare Network”, skincare companies will be able to leverage the scientific-matching mechanism of the recommendation engine. These companies will target epigenetic profile segments with the chance to put their auto-screened products in the recommendation section of the consumer’s test results.

This platform was developed on the Ethereum blockchain and rewards consumers that have been targeted by companies with tokens that can be used to subsidize future skincare tests. Due to the “anonymous transparency” of blockchains, EpigenCare is able to look at the commonly perceived intrusiveness frequently related to the likes of 23andMe and Ancestry.com tests.

William Lee, EpigenCare’s CEO, explained that by using blockchain technology to construct a structured ecosystem, consumers will be able to know that any data of theirs being sold is directly, voluntarily, and exclusively for their own advantage.

SpaceX will fly two private citizens on a trip around the moon in 2018, the company's founder Elon Musk announced Monday (Feb. 27).

The private spaceflight company will use its Falcon Heavy rocket to send the two paying passengers into space aboard one of the company's Dragon spacecraft . The two private citizens, who have not yet been named, approached SpaceX about taking a trip around the moon, and have "already paid a significant deposit" for the cost of the mission, according to a statement from the company. The names of the two individuals will be announced later, pending the result of initial health tests to ensure their fitness for the mission, the statement said. "Like the Apollo astronauts before them, these individuals will travel into space carrying the hopes and dreams of all humankind, driven by the universal human spirit of exploration," SpaceX representatives said in the statement .

The two passengers will be the only people on board what is expected to be about a weeklong trip around the moon, according to Musk, who spoke with reporters during a phone conference today.

"This would be a long loop around the moon … It would skim the surface of the moon, go quite a bit further out into deep space and then loop back to Earth," Musk said during the teleconference. "So I'm guessing, distance-wise, maybe [300,000] or 400,000 miles [about 500,000 to 650,000 kilometers]."

The moon flight is scheduled to launch after SpaceX flies NASA astronauts to the International Space Station as a part of the Commercial Crew Program. Right now, SpaceX is planning to make an uncrewed flight of its crew-carrying Dragon spacecraft to the space station this year, and its first crewed flights are expected to happen in mid-2018, according to Musk. (However, a recent report suggests that those dates may be pushed back.) That means the Falcon 9 and Dragon crew capsule will be approved for human spaceflight by NASA before the moon mission takes place.

The Falcon Heavy rocket consists of a Falcon 9 rocket with two additional first stage boosters strapped on. The integrated Falcon Heavy and Dragon crew capsule will undergo an FAA evaluation process for the moon flight, Musk said.

Musk also said that NASA "always has first priority," and that if the agency wanted its own astronauts to be the first people to fly on a "mission of this nature," then "of course NASA would take priority."

The crew-carrying Dragon spacecraft will operate, in large part, autonomously, so the passengers would have to train for emergency procedures but would not be in charge of piloting the spacecraft, Musk said. The crew capsule will require some upgrades for the deep-space flight, but Musk said those would be limited mainly to a communications system built for much longer distances, rather than the relatively short trips to the space station.

When asked about the ballpark cost of the mission, Musk said, "I … can't say the exact cost, that's confidential. It would be comparable to maybe a little more than what the cost of a crewed mission to the space station would be."

NASA currently pays about $80 million per seat on the three-person Russian Soyuz vehicle. SpaceX's first commercial crew contract with the agency is for $2.6 billion; the company is required to provide at least two and up to six flights to the station on the Dragon capsule, which can carry seven passengers at a time. That breaks down to anywhere from $1.3 billion to $433 million per flight.

Musk said the moon trip will contribute to SpaceX's ultimate goal of establishing permanent Mars colonies .

"The goal for SpaceX, from its founding in 2002, has been to accelerate … space exploration, ultimately with the idea of a self-sustaining civilization on Mars and making humanity multiplanetary," he said. "So a critical step along the way is getting to know what it's like to have people in deep space ."

STAN MYERS    “NEW ENERGY” FROM WATER

New technology that runs on water, this is the future!

Elon Musk’s vision of establishing a human settlement on Mars just became a lot more feasible, after a study conducted by a team of Portuguese-French scientists concluded that plasma technology could help foster the production of oxygen on the Red Planet’s atmosphere.

The recent study, published in the Plasma Sources Science and Technology journal, asserts that the prevalence of carbon dioxide in Mars’ atmosphere is actually ideal for the creation of oxygen. According to University of Lisbon researcher Vasco Guerra, the carbon dioxide-rich state of the planet’s atmosphere provides the perfect conditions for creating oxygen through decomposition.

In a statement to Astrowatch.net , Guerra noted that the use of low-temperature plasma decomposition would benefit both Mars’ inhabitants and those traveling to and from the planet.

“Our main conclusion is precisely that Mars has nearly ideal conditions for creating oxygen from carbon dioxide by non-thermal plasmas. Carbon dioxide decomposition can provide oxygen for breathing and contribute to the production of fuels to be used on the return trip to Earth,” Guerra said, according to Astrowatch.net .

As noted in the findings of the researchers , the production of oxygen on the Red Planet would be done in-situ , which is ideal considering that Mars’ atmosphere is about 95.9 percent carbon dioxide. This CO2 which could then be converted into oxygen and carbon monoxide, the latter of which will be utilized in the production of propellant for rocket vehicles. The low general temperature in the Red Planet, which is -82 degrees Fahrenheit on average, is also perfect for the decomposition of carbon dioxide.

“The pressure and temperature ranges in the about 96 percent carbon dioxide Martian atmosphere favor the vibrational excitation and subsequent up-pumping of the asymmetric stretching mode, which is believed to be a key factor for an efficient plasma dissociation, at the expense of the excitation of the other modes.”
