Valentina Vladimirovna Terechkova

( Russian : Валентина Владимировна Терешкова ), born on March 6 , 1937 in Maslennikovo , the district of Allayev in Yaroslavl oblast , is the first woman to fly in space, and is the first Soviet cosmonaut , thanks to her flight from 16 to June 19 , 1963 .

Valentina Terechkova remains to this day the only woman to have made a solo trip in space and the youngest cosmonaut.

After the successful flight of Yuri Gagarin , Sergei Korolev , the father of the Soviet space program, has the idea of sending a woman into space.

Textile worker at age 18 , she is chosen from over 400 women candidates to become, under the guidance of Yuri Gagarin, the first woman in space.
