I am a Dreamer. I always have been and always will be. As a writer, I create worlds in my head. I piece together variables into likely scenarios that could potentially happen.
The Future indeed, is what we create it to be. Those in Asgardia believe that we can create something better and nobler than ourselves. That is why I joined Asgardia and why I became an AMP.
The World is in bad shape. Wars, Hate and Terrorism top our news broadcasts. Mankind seems to be advancing towards destruction in a slow , inevitable shuffle. Attitudes need to change, if Humanity is to survive. We maybe be intelligent as a species, but we are not wise. We behave like bullies in the school yard or rebellious teenagers. If we want to be the Adults of a brave knew future, we must first grow up.
This is the dream of Asgardia. We are visionaries who are awake and SEE that Humanity must evolve and change it's manner of thinking. Only time will tell if we evolve and become Humanity's' future or if we devolve an eventually fall back into old habits and traps of the past.
What we hope to achieve, is to go forth as a United Humanity, not as countries and territories which are divided. We want more a version of the United Federation of Planets from Star Trek where Captain Kirk come from Iowa, USA and Captain Picard comes from France. A future where we look for diplomatic solutions, but can defend ourselves if necessary as a last resort.
The potential reality is more likely to end up like the show The Expanse. The UN controls Earth and the Moon, Mars wants independence and those living in the "Belt" feel disenfranchised. Everyone wants the Belt's resources, but do not respect the hard working people of the Belt. Given the nature of Mankind, that social/political structure is plausible.
Except...
That scenario does not take into consideration Asgardia. Asgardia would take in Terrans, Martians, Belters and any potential exteraterrials we may eventually meet (I hate to think that we are alone in the Universe!). That singulair belief in inclusiveness, is what sets Asgardia apart, both now and in the future.
We, can create that future that is more like Star Trek, because if Mankind can envision something,then they can create it. We envisioned Asgardia as a place to put aside the pettiness of Earth born strife that plagues the world.
As an AMP, I try my best to help create the brightest and best future possible for Mankind. The best way to predict the future, is to create it. Do we want a Solar System where everyone has the best opportunities to be their best selves, pursuing their dreams? Or do we create a society that looks down on manual labor or miners? Maybe someone really like to work with their hands and they want to construct ship, station and colonies and keep them running. Maybe someone really likes plants and it gives them satisfaction to know that they are feeding the station. They should not be treated any differently from anyone else.
The point is, the future is what we make it. It is, how we want it to be. Be, Asgardian where you live. Right now, while on Earth and later, whether you are on a ship, station or colony. Be your best self and create a better future of peace and prosperity of ALL beings regardless of who they are and where they come from. Don't let those of us who where here at the beginning down! When I step down as an AMP (I may run for one more term) someone else will have to step up. Here is what I would ask of the Future from here in the Past.
1) Never let go of the Core Values of Asgardia.
To be like Earth Nations is tempting, but also corrupting.
Think for yourselves, be guides for the rest of Humanity, not
followers.
2) Beware of corruption! Do not let a love of money or any
perceived social standing change what Asgardia stands for.
Corporations might try to run things or to take over. DO NOT
let them influence your Government. Elect people with
integrity and keep political fraction out of Asgardia.
3) I repeat, NO political factions or parties in Asgardia! Such
things can lead to corruption. (We are seeing this on Earth
right now and so we banned it!)
4) YOU, create the Culture of Asgardia! YOU decide on what the
social norms are to be. Make wise decisions, once cultural
norms are established they tend to stay.
5) Be brave. Be the BEST you, that you can be! Remain curious
and adventurous! You are all explorer regardless of
whatever your position in society is. Learn everything you
can, whenever you can! Never stop learning! You maybe a
miner, but you can learn astronomy and report what you see
out on the Belt, or write a paper and publish it! It is NEVER to
late to learn something new, step out of your comfort zone
or change a career! The more you know, the more useful
you can be in an emergency.
6) I would be extremely please to have my name put on a
National Library and Archives! If in the future you are
thinking of honoring me at all, that would be my wish.
Right now, there are debates going on about whether
physical libraries are relevant. After all, you can download a
book, music or a movie. Very easy to do and if you are living
in a tight space or traveling in a ship, then that option is great
and necessary.
All great civilizations have Libraries and Archives. They are
there to help you do research. Physical books, like repair
manuals can be essential should a network go down, solar
radiation takes out files, hacker break in or there is an EMP
burst. If the solar array is out and there isn't enough power to
read the digital manual, then a physical copy might just save
a colony. Even on space missions now, crews have physical
manuals and protocols with them. Could they have the same
information on a tablet? Yes. They probably do, but they still
have the hard copies as well. As for an Archives, history is
important to any society and culture if they wish to be
remembered and to avoid the mistakes of the past.
My career outside of Asgardia, is that I am a Library
Technician. Yes, I work in a Library. I have heard people say
that they should not pay for a public library because they can
get information online or download whatever media they
want. They are short sighted fools. My internet went down
once and I used my public library's internet to attend a
meeting. My library use to have an art collection that had
been donated by its founder(sadly, thay have been slowly
selling off the city's art collection to keep the library going.)
People go there to study in a quiet place. I can guarantee you
that I can find over 100 books through the library system
that you CAN NOT download or view online! Library's teach
classes and hold meetings. Libraries are open to ALL. Just
like Asgardia they are all inclusive, all are welcome in a
library. Libraries combat ignorance and uphold knowledge. I
believe in libraries as much as I believe in Asgardia. I hope
you do too. Save knowledge and save history!
