Since prehistoric times, when the first humans gazed  at the stars, the dreams of the wonders of heaven have been a central  ingredient of mankind’s mythology, religion and in the modern age, the  driving force to reach beyond the boundaries of the human voyage.

Early Argonauts used the stars to navigate the seas  and oceans. Explorers used it to plot their course through unknown  territory. Ancient civilizations gave name to the constellations after  their gods and beliefs, laying the ground of today’s religions.

As our civilization matured, with the industrial and  scientific revolution, the heavens constantly changed, challenged and  shaped the perception of our place in the universe.

It is only merely a few hundred years ago when we  thought that our planet was the center of the universe. Modern science  proved our sun to be one of trillions among the infinite stars in the  universe and with the new discoveries in the field of quantum mechanics  and theories of multiverse, giving us a hint that our universe might  just as well be just one of many others.

Since the beginning of the space age, which began  with Sputnik in 1957, space-science has given us countless new  technologies, from the simple Teflon in our frying pans to innumerable  scientific discoveries ranging from new drugs for curing deadly diseases  to inventions that laid the ground of the information technology,  Internet, and global communication and positioning, GPS using satellites  orbiting the planet, and yet we are still in the beginning of what lays  ahead of us.

With this in mind, it is quite obvious that  space-science is essential for us as species to evolve further, to  invent new technologies and make new discoveries.

Our planet can no longer sustain the need of  resources for the growing population and it will be necessary for humans  to colonize other celestial bodies and planets. The resources of our  planet are shrinking at an rapidly increasing speed, and it is needless  to say that resources have been one of the two main reasons of countless  wars through our history, the other meaningless reason being  ideologies, like politics and religion. The day that we have to leave  the cradle crawls closer and closer for every minute. It is therefore a  necessity of survival of our species to develop space-travel at a large  scale available to everyone at any time. Money, social status,  geographic habitat, or any other reason, should not dictate whatever or  not an individual has access to space travel.

That is where the Bitnation Space Agency comes in  play with the SpaceChain space program. The very special essence of this  idea is to open-source and decentralize space-travel; a space agency  that is not bound to any nation or state, free for everyone to  participate regardless of nationality, geographic habitation or current  political situation.

Sometimes it’s amusing to poke fun at conspiracy theorists. After  all, most of them believe irrational stories with little to no evidence,  and attempt to fit contrasting evidence to their theory – as opposed to  actual scientists, who realize their theories could be wrong in the  face of evidence to the contrary.

But in the case of NASA’s former Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell , it’s actually a bit sad what has happened. Since he returned from the Moon in 1971, he has spouted some increasingly bizarre conspiracy theories, mostly regarding aliens visiting Earth, and his latest is no different. In an interview with the Mirror Online , he says that aliens came to Earth to prevent a nuclear war between the U.S. and the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

In the interview, he references the famous White Sands Missile Range  facility in New Mexico, where the world’s first atomic bomb – Trinity –  was tested on July 16, 1945. “White Sands was a testing ground for  atomic weapons – and that’s what the extraterrestrials were interested  in,” he said. “They wanted to know about our military capabilities. My  own experience talking to people has made it clear the ETs had been  attempting to keep us from going to war and help create peace on Earth.”

He went on to say that unnamed Air Force officers had told him their  missiles were frequently disabled or shot down by UFOs flying overhead.  Why aliens would use interstellar travel to come all the way to Earth  and disable a few missiles here and there rather than, I don’t know,  making contact or something, is up for debate, I guess. “To me this is  just another case of UFO fantasy and speculation,” UFO expert Nigel  Watson, author of the UFO Investigations Manual , told IFLScience. “When you try getting to the facts it is like trying to herd cats.”

Let’s give Mitchell a bit of credit though, and talk about some  actual science. He was, after all, the sixth man on the Moon and the  Lunar Module Pilot on the Apollo 14 mission.  This was the eighth manned mission of the Apollo program, and the third  to land on the lunar surface. Mitchell, together with his commander  Alan Shepard, spent more than 30 hours on the surface, during which time  they collected 45 kilograms (100 pounds) of lunar samples and performed  various scientific activities. Shepard also famously hit a golf ball during this mission, while Mitchell himself threw a lunar scoop handle like a javelin.

But it’s been a bit of a fall from grace for Mitchell since then. We  wish him all the best, and hope that at some point he returns to the  real world with the rest of us.

The Sun will swallow Mercury and Venus, and  may get large enough to swallow Earth as well. Even if it doesn't,  Earth will be roasted to a cinder crisp. One school of thought predicts  that the drag from the Sun's outer gas envelope will cause the Earth to  spiral into the Sun, but as with all things scientific, there is another  school of thought that says this won't happen. If it isn't swallowed,  Earth will likely get flung out into interstellar space due to tidal  interactions with the Sun and the Sun's gradual loss of mass once it  enters the red giant stage. 20 billion years from now: If the current  rate of expansion of the universe grows, in 20 billion years, the  universe could be expanding so rapidly that atoms will no longer be able  to hold on to their electrons. This predicted event is known as the  "Big Rip." Blame dark energy. 3×1043 years from now: estimated maximum  time for all nucleons in the observable universe to decay, if protons  are unstable. Whether they are is currently an unresolved question in  physics. This is the Total  Existence Failure of the entire universe, anything complex enough to be  considered life that would care about it would likely have evaporated to  nothing long before this. Out of all the above, this is the most  likely. ∞th century The heat death of the universe is a scientific  prediction that eventually the universe will expand so much it will no  longer contain any thermodynamic free energy with which to do work. At  this point the universe will be cold, dark, and essentially empty  forever. That is, unless quantum fluctuations or some other phenomena  eventually cause something to occur, like a new Big Bang. Forever is a  long time, and this kind of physics is poorly understood at present.

Danielle Wood leads the Space Enabled research group at the MIT Media Lab, where she works to tear down the barriers that limit the benefits of space exploration to only the few, the rich or the elite. She identifies six technologies developed for space exploration that can contribute to sustainable development across the world -- from observation satellites that provide information to aid organizations to medical research on microgravity that can be used to improve health care on Earth. The 22nd century

The widespread emergence of post-scarcity and resource-based economies, rapid growth of transhumanism, and major developments in space travel all mark the 22nd century. Practically all of the world's energy comes from either fusion or renewable sources now.

Artificial intelligence – having begun to merge with human intelligence in the previous century – now surpasses it, reaching whole new levels of cognitive and intellectual capability. Though lacking the raw emotions and subtle traits of organic human minds, the sheer speed and power of AI begins to profoundly alter the course of history. Almost every high-level decision by government and business now comes directly from these sentient machines, which oversee vast swathes of virtual employees, robots and other automated systems.

Developments in space during this time include numerous permanent, manned settlements on the Moon and Mars; regular crewed trips to the gas giants; huge mining operations in the asteroid fields; and various interstellar probes. Space tourism booms during this period and trips to the Moon's surface and elsewhere become relatively commonplace.

The speed and magnitude of progress now occurring, both on Earth and throughout the Solar System, is creating what earlier forecasters would have named a technological singularity. Indeed, many of the scientific discoveries in the 22nd century exceed the comprehension of "natural" unaided humans lacking the requisite brain upgrades and enhancements. The most notable breakthroughs are those in quantum physics – but wholly new fields also emerge that were untapped in the previous century.

The 21st century began with the United States as the sole superpower in the absence of the Soviet Union, with China emerging as a potential superpower. The debate over what should be done about fossil fuel pollution and alternative energy raged in the new century after most of the 20th century was marked by rapid industrial expansion. As the Cold War was over and Islamic fundamentalist-related terrorism on the rise, the United States and its allies turned their attention to the Middle East.

A new set of crises would emerge in the 2020s. Climate change was beginning to have a significant impact on worldwide commodities; in particular, food and water supplies. In the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere, growing instability led to a number of resource wars. Perversely, the hunt for fossil fuels continued, with even the Arctic becoming a political and economic battleground as nations sought to claim the last remaining deposits.

The 2030s were marked by a rapid, worldwide shift towards clean energy, algae biofuel and other renewable sources – aided by startling breakthroughs in nanotechnology. This was followed by progress in nuclear fusion, though widespread adoption would have to wait until later decades. Despite this, conflict was now brewing around much of the world. Africa, Asia and other regions were suffering mightily due to food shortages and a growing influx of refugees affected by climate change, resource wars and political instability.

Exponential advances in computing power – in parallel with genetics, nanotechnology and robotics – continued into the 2040s, leading to what many called the birth of "transhumanism". Ever smaller, more complex and sophisticated devices were becoming implantable and integrated within the human body – able to combat disease, enhance the senses and provide entertainment or communication in ways that simply were not possible before. Geopolitics was undergoing a revolution too, with India now surpassing the U.S. in terms of economic power and even threatening to overtake China in the near future.

Mankind began to escape the confines of its crowded home planet with a permanent colony on Mars in the 2050s. Even greater advances in computing power saw AI beginning to play a major role in business and government decisions. Economic growth was now under severe strain, however, due to ecological impacts, resource scarcity, demographic trends, technological unemployment and other factors.

By 2060, the world's population had begun to level off and plateau. This was partly a result of declining fertility rates (aided by improvements in education and birth control), but also from significant numbers of deaths caused by deteriorating environmental conditions. Entire nations were now being devastated by the effects of climate change. Despite advances in technology, the fundamental problem remained that humanity was consuming too much, too fast, beyond what the Earth could sustainably provide. Desperate attempts were made to improve carbon capture and geoengineering methods, but the sheer magnitude of this crisis would persist for decades to come.

The 2070s saw major growth in the use of fusion power. Accelerated space development also marked this time, with expansion of the lunar colonies and their automated mining operations. By now, a full-scale environmental catastrophe was unfolding on Earth, with sea levels forcing the large-scale evacuation of cities.

With continuing advances in AI, the 2080s saw an explosion in scientific discoveries. This helped to slow the rise in global temperatures and pave the way for a more sustainable future in the 22nd century. Transhumanism was now a mainstream phenomenon, the average citizen becoming heavily reliant on brain-computer interfaces and other implantable devices, contributing to a decline in religious adherence.

By the 2090s, it became clear that Homo sapiens were no longer the dominant species on the planet. Much of the day-to-day running of world affairs was now handled exclusively by ultra-fast, ultra-intelligent machines, robots and virtual entities.

BIOMASS is a €400 million Earth Observation mission launched by the European Space Agency (ESA). It provides the first truly comprehensive measurements of global forest biomass. High resolution maps of tropical, temperate and boreal forest biomass are generated, using a radar sensor powerful enough to determine both the height and wood content of individual trees.
