This design is inspired by the mythologies that have been created by humans in an attempt to understand their universe better in the absence of the sophisticated scientific techniques that we now have at our disposal.

According to the Norse mythology, for example, the sky (Asgard) was the home of gods. (Beyond reach, and mesmerizing - what else could it be?) The humans lived in Midgard (the middle realm), which is our world, and finally there was the underworld - Valhalla. Running through Midgard and connecting Valhalla to Asgard, there was Yggdrasil - the tree of life. It connected humanity to divinity, Earth to sky, reality to imagination, known world to the unknown universe. This tree, Yggdrasil, is the central figure in this flag, representing the humanity aspiring toward Asgard. Whereas the ancient Norsemen once created this story wondering about what was there up in the sky, and presumably wishing for something (such as a tree) that would constitute a passage into these realms above; we have now created Asgardia, with a willingness to not just wonder about but to explore and to understand what lies beyond our planet.

Yet the Norsemen were not the only people who have created mythologies / philosophies to understand the world. The Greeks, too, did the same. Pre-Socratic philosophers, for instance, conceived of the idea that everything in the universe was composed of even smaller particles (atoms) and was a configuration of 4 basic elements found in Nature: earth, water, air, and fire. Aristotle added a fifth element to this list: aether - which was assumed to be the intangible element that filled whatever was left from the 4 basic elements (much like what we choose to call ''space'' nowadays!) The colours of the roots of our Yggdrasil on this flag, growing out from our home-planet and splitting into 5 branches as they reach towards the sky, also represent the 5 elements. The 2 branches on the left are earth and water, and we have air and fire on the right. In the middle, dashing upward, we see the upright white beam of light, which represents the aether.

The aether is an aptly chosen name for an element that is represented on the flag of Asgardia for at least one more reason.

The Russian Cosmist thinker, Vladimir Vernadsky said in one of his writings on the concept of Noosphere that ''the noosphere is a new geological phenomenon on our planet. In it for the first time mankind becomes a major geological force. Mankind can and must transform his habitat by his labor and thought, transform it radically in comparison to its previous state. Before mankind wider and wider creative possibilities are opening. And perhaps my grandchild's generation will glimpse their flourishing .... The noosphere is the latest of many stages of biological evolution in geological history the stage of our days.'' This new stage of our evolution, this departure from the realm of the 4 elements and venturing beyond, is very much like an excursion into the aether, the 5th element. Because the ''intangible'' aether can also be thought of as the collection of ideas and knowledge produced by the collective genius of the humanity.

This is what is called ''noosphere'' in the modern terms, and is thus what Asgardia, as a project, has pledged to protect and propagate. Therefore aether is one of the branches of our Yggdrasil.
