Here is already the planting 'bot in open-source programming. I've thought about putting this together for our garden this year. This could work almost anywhere, just need sunlight, and to overcome possible garden spaces. It'd be interesting to see how you could modify this system for orbiting space stations.

Low energy systems are obviously preffered, but it becomes a trivial concept once you start generating at scale - what does become an issue is thermal dissipation - space lacks matter for conduciton/convection, typically. That's the energies you want to try and keep low, then the thermal dissipation systems can have an easier time and scale smaller. If you've a cunning design for a electrochemical (electrocatalytic) biomass fuel cell, these might be able to assist in powering habitation facilities. But hopefully it can be engineered to be able to beam power anywhere. I'm still not overly clear what you'd mean by "planting machine".

I think all those signs of radio and other frequencies made us vunerable and easy to find for any civilization, with good or bad intentions... If suddenly appears unknow spaceships on Earth, i guess in a brute statistic 1 in 10 people should know ID that is not from Earth. That mean around 70 milions earthlings could identify if this is from Earth, or even this not from Earth, by some similarities with our tech, design and languages. So, first we need teach everyone things about space, time, size, volume, mass, gravity, physics (even without calculations for those who doesnt like of mathematics...) in a way that if something of outer-space come here and try to conquer, or kill, or kidnap, or even make friendship, everyone on Earth should ID that's not from Earth. Teach, education, and knowledge, is the best way to evolve a civiliization... and if they reach us in short-time space-trips by hacking the space-time and they want to destroy us... Man, surrender.... cause there's no atomic bomb capable to destroy them in this universe, cause they tecnology is just so evolved to do those things that we are just primitives for them, even with our tech...

If ever we did come into contact with another lifeform, it would be hard to tell if it's friendly or not but it could also be hard to show them that we do not want to harm them and to create peace due to the fact that we more than likely will not know how to communicate with them, for all we know our universal sign of peace could look threatening to them, this is what I'm concerned about. I would like to think that one day in the distant future we will travel far and wide across the universe and find all types of intelligent life and become a huge nation of all life.

@chenzexian, you can speak your native languages inside respective region groups. As a base (purely to facilitate communication until we get translations incorporated into the forum) we are speaking English.

i agree with xuthal..the near near future will bring correct and immediate translation of the spoken word... in my opinion a "meaning" will take more time to be completely transported via short texting in a forum...but it will be possible if we think future tough.. i think a common language would be great.. even if it would be something completely new. for now and for pragmatic reasons only i would stick to the most common language used ONLINE.(as we are online for now) i think we all know what that is:) and if that changed let me know http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats7.htm warm greetings A's

Completely accurate, context aware "Universal Translators" will never happen, because they would require the machine to read a person's mind. Anything that strays from formal language will become completely incomprehensible. Choosing a language, as opposed to letting "Translators" do the work, is the only option. Whether it be Mandarin, English, Esperanto, or Lojban.

The creation of a language would be a wasteful task. Technology is improving the automated translations at a very high speed. Within a few years we will be able to auto translate everything correctly and there will be instant sound translation to follow for sure. It would be more usefull to ensure that the translation technology is applied to these forums as soon as possible, So that all citizens can use a shared platform, instead of different forums for each language.
