Estamos en el agujero; la forma en la que nosotros educamos estudiantes no ha tenido una actualización importante en más de un siglo y la tecnología ha revolucionado lo que necesitamos enseñar a nuestros hijos, pero también las capacidades que nosotros tenemos a nuestra disposición para enseñar.

Educando para el futuro...

Elon Musk parece estar dando titulares todos los días con sus naves espaciales, la Gigafábrica, las colonias de Marte, los túneles secretos, los laboratorios de inteligencia artificial y los carros de conducción autónoma. Como sea, hay algo que creó, que podría ser aún más notable, pero no atrajo tanta atención. A él no le gustó la forma en la que sus hijos estaban siendo educados, así que los sacó de su escuela privada e inició la suya. El nombre de la escuela es Ad Astra, frase latina que, en español, significa "a las estrellas" o "hasta las estrellas", y parece estar basada en la creencia de Musk que afirma que las escuelas deben enseñar el problema, no las herramientas; digamos que usted está tratando de enseñar a las personas cómo funcionan los motores, un enfoque tradicional sería darles cursos sobre destornilladores y llaves, pero una manera mejor de hacerlo, sería: "Aquí está un motor, ahora, ¿cómo lo vamos a separar?... Bueno, se necesita un destornillador" y, entonces, una cosa muy importante pasa, la relevancia de la herramienta se hace aparente.

La decisión de Musk destaca un problema más grande, el cómo educamos a las personas necesita cambiar. La educación hoy en día, realmente, no es tan diferente a la de hace cien años atrás, todavía tenemos salones llenos de estudiantes, todos aprendiendo la misma cosa al mismo ritmo, maestros mal pagados y subestimados que pasan treinta años enseñando, más o menos, lo mismo.

Los padres deben ser los más preocupados desde que los niños tienen la edad suficiente para ir a la escuela, hasta que sean lo suficientemente independientes para tomar sus propias decisiones. Estos se consumen, preocupados por la educación de sus hijos y tiene sentido, ya que, después de todo, siempre se pensó que conseguirles una buena educación a los hijos era asegurarles un futuro brillante y los padres de todo el mundo se vuelven locos, haciendo cualquier cosa para que sus hijos reciban la mejor educación que ellos necesitan, se mudan a mejores ciudades, gastan grandes cantidades de dinero en escuelas y tutores para asegurar que sus hijos estén preparados para el mundo del mañana.

Sin embargo, para los padres de hoy, las cosas se han vuelto aún más complicadas, el mundo en el que crecerán la generación Z y las siguientes generaciones será radicalmente diferente a todo lo que hemos visto en el pasado, un mundo lleno de inteligencia artificial, ingeniería genética, medicina personalizada, automóviles autodirigidos y personas en Marte; un mundo donde las personas podrían no tener trabajo y donde la sociedad misma puede organizarse de formas, fundamentalmente, diferentes, entonces, ¿cómo se supone que los padres y la sociedad sepan cómo prepararlos para tener éxito en un mundo que no podemos predecir?

Comienza por repensar lo que es una escuela. Las escuelas solían ser los depósitos de conocimiento humano e ir a la escuela era la mejor manera de aprender cualquier cosa, ahora que ya no es el caso, el conocimiento ya no se limita a aulas polvorientas o libros antiguos, gracias a internet, es ahora accesible a cualquiera que lo desee.

Además, la educación debe dar a la gente un entendimiento de que el mundo no está dividido en temas discretos. Separar el conocimiento en columnas etiquetadas de ciencia, historia o chino, es, a veces, pedagógicamente útil, pero todas las personas deben darse cuenta de que el mundo no está compuesto de situaciones independientes y que no pueden ser estudiadas aislando unas de otras.

Mucho de esto puede parecer idealista o poco realista, pero un cambio radical es necesario si vamos a imaginar cómo vivir en el futuro que estamos creando.

The ability to organize grassroots movements, whether locally or across the globe, is made possible by an open Internet. Since its creation, the Internet has become the world’s megaphone for free speech, protected by the principles of Net Neutrality, which require internet service providers (ISPs) to give everyone equal access to everything you use the internet for -- email, watching videos, listening to music, or signing petitions on Change.org.

Without Net Neutrality, ISPs can choose what you see online, favoring some sources or blocking others. For example, if someone launched a petition on Change.org against a company like Verizon, Net Neutrality prevents Verizon from blocking or slowing their customers’ access to our site.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is moving to end Net Neutrality -- which could mean giving big cable companies room to charge extra fees, block and censor users -- by removing ISPs from Title II of the Communications Act, a rule that means ISPs are subjected to tougher regulations that prevent them blocking sites, creating paid “fast” lanes, and throttling internet speeds. This decision could have global implications for the way the world shares and receives information from journalists, newsrooms, and NGO’s.

Net Neutrality also prevents ISPs from creating paid “fast lanes” that would give faster delivery of content to companies who can afford to pay more. An organization or platform like Change.org that couldn’t afford those fees, couldn’t communicate with their supporters.

In the United States, there is strong bipartisan support for Net Neutrality. A recent poll conducted by Mozilla found that Republicans, Democrats and Independents overwhelmingly support these rules.

A closed off Internet means fewer ways for millions of people to make the change they want to see.
