I am a 60-year-old American (who also has an Irish passport) with an unusual background for Asgardia in that my focus has been on the social sciences (history and anthropology).
I feel there is a strong need to have some variety among the leaders in Asgardia in terms of background and interests; as a social sciences person, I have to leave the building of our Space Colony to the many wonderful engineers and other science types.
But it when comes to figuring out ways we can all enjoy living, working, sharing and creating our life within the colony (especially planning for a long term future) I think that a social science perspective is vitally important.
I have lived in many different cultures from my native California (and Mississippi, Denver US) to Venezuela, Sweden, the UK and now Ireland (for the last 21 years).
This gives me some perspective on how both similar and different people can be, and some insight into the challenges creating a real nation is likely to take.
As non-traditional clergy (Asatru/Old Norse Paganism) I also would like to help see religion celebrated in Asgardia in such way that those who wish to practice can, but without in anyway infringing on the rights of others to not participate.
I feel this should be a personal and family matter, treated like clubs and other societies of which I hope we have many.
Finally as a textile artist and musician, I want to help encourage the cultural and creative life in Asgardia; I’ll be happy to help form the first knitting and weaving clubs; help find ways to make sure there are places where citizens can practice being creative (craft rooms, music practice areas etc) and pressure other personal and cultural interests (libraries, drama clubs, gaming and sports groups).
I feel these things, in the future will be as important as figuring out how to grow food and the science required to actually live in space; because just living there is not enough; we want to create a nation and a national culture; a place where people can both work hard and enjoy themselves afterwards.
