We present some of the experiences, lessons learned and benefits gained in capacity building projects undertaken by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. and our partners from developing and mature space nations. We focus on the Turkish, Algerian and Nigerian know-how and technology transfer programmes which form part of the first Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC) in orbit. From the lessons learned on Surrey’s know-how and technology transfer partnership programmes, it is clear that space technology needs to be implemented responsibly as part of a long-term capacity building plan to be a sustainable one. It needs to be supported with appropriate policy and legal frameworks, institutional development, including community participation, human resources development and strengthening of managerial systems. In taking this on board, DMC has resulted in a strong international partnership combining national objectives, humanitarian aid and commerce. The benefits include: • Ownership of space-based and supporting ground assets with low capital expenditure that is in line with national budgets of developing nations. • Ownership of data and control over data acquisition. • More for the money via collaborative consortium. • Space related capacity building in organisations and nations with the goal of sustainable development. • Opportunities for international collaboration, including disaster management and relief.

Preso da un articolo su WIRED.it, penso sia molto apprezzato da tanti asgardiani. 5 cose che non possono mancare in una serie tv su Isaac Asimov di Lorenzo Fantoni Giornalista, videogiochi, feticci nerd e affini 13 APR, 2018 Il popolare autore di fantascienza arriverà sui nostri schermi con una serie tv finanziata da Apple sul Ciclo della Fondazione, ecco alcuni capisaldi del sua visione È appena arrivata, ma era nell’aria da tempo, la notizia che Apple si imbarcherà nella produzione di una serie tv basa sul Ciclo della Fondazione di Isaac Asimov, una saga che occupa sette volumi, iniziata negli anni ’50 e conclusa all’inizio dei ’90. Il Ciclo della Fondazione è forse uno dei progetti più ambiziosi e simbolici di Asimov, quello in cui la sua visione poetica di una fantascienza rigorosa, matematica, cerebrale, ma comunque positiva e tesa un futuro di miglioramento abbraccia una storia che percorre migliaia di anni e dissolve i propri personaggi per diventare essa stessa protagonista del racconto. Renderla una serie tv è senza dubbio un progetto estremamente ambizioso che porta con sé molte criticità, legate sia all’enormità del racconto, sia al bisogno di rendere in maniera consona l’ambientazione e lo stile di Asimov. Fateci caso, nonostante la sua fama e la sua produzione, ci sono pochissimi adattamenti famosi delle sue opere. Se togliamo Io, Robot e L’uomo bicentenario, sono tutte produzioni minori che si contano sulle dita di una mano. Ma quali sono le fondamenta del suo stile? Quali le caratteristiche imprescindibili? 1. Pochi fronzoli Non si può certo dire che Asimov sia uno scrittore barocco, la sua prosa tende a essere semplice, chiara, priva di particolari artifici retorici. Se fosse un carpentiere sarebbe quello che preferisce creare un mobile essenziale ma funzionale, piuttosto che indugiare su dettagli complessi e soluzioni pensate per stupire il committente. Non a caso è sempre stato considerato uno dei principali punti di contatto fra scienza e letteratura, l’esponente di spicco di una fantascienza che punta a essere soprattutto scienza e a indugiare meno sugli aspetti fantastici, assurdi, spettacolari o introspettivi. Lui e Dick erano i due estremi del genere. Rendere tutto ciò dal punto di vista visivo e narrativo potrebbe essere complesso in un medium che ha senza dubbio bisogno di qualcosa di emozionante per mantenere viva l’attenzione degli spettatori. 2. La scienza come superpotere Asimov è uno dei principali esponenti di quella che viene definita fantascienza sociologica, i suoi racconti sono spesso analisi del cambiamento dell’uomo attraverso i secoli, indagano i meccanismi che regolano la nostra società, ci stuzzicano con quesiti logici, mettono a nudo le contraddizioni della politica, e l’inadeguatezza dei governi. Per Asimov la scienza era l’unico superpotere necessario nelle sue opere. Grazie ad essa erano possibili i robot positronici, le relative leggi della robotica, il supercomputer Multivac, le predizioni della Psicostoriografia. 3. Pedine, non personaggi Questa predilezione di Asimov per il grande disegno globale lo portava inevitabilmente a interessarsi molto meno dei personaggi che si muovevano al suo interno. Ci sono alcune notabili eccezioni, come Hari Seldon, lo studioso che preconizza la caduta delle grandi civiltà galattiche nel Ciclo della Fondazione, o il robot de L’Uomo bicentenario, ma nella maggior parte dei casi Asimov non era interessato a indagare le profondità dell’animo umano come alcuni suoi colleghi. Non c’era alcuna frontiera all’interno dell’essere umano se non quella necessaria a far progredire la scienza. Questo forse rendere le sue opere prive di personaggi memorabili (escludendo il ciclo di Lucky Starr, scritto da giovanissimo) e potrebbe rappresentare un ostacolo in una serie tv che ha spesso bisogno di creare un legame con lo spettatore attraverso i suoi protagonisti. 4. Supercomputer Una delle intuizioni più interessanti di Asimov è senza dubbio Multivac, una sorta di enorme supercomputer in grado di aiutare l’umanità che assume di volta in volta ruoli e sembianze differenti. In alcuni racconti è grande quanto un pianeta, in altri occupa poco spazio, a volte si esprime con fogli stampati e funziona a schede forate, proprio come i supercomputer dell’epoca di Asimov, altre volte invece usa la telepatia, in alcuni casi segue la logica, in altri e in grado di esprimere emozioni o ascendere addirittura al divino. Multivac e in generale i calcolatori sono senza dubbio una delle figure più importanti dei racconti di Asimov, che ne aveva compreso le possibilità e il ruolo che avrebbero avuto nell’aiutare l’essere umano ad analizzare una grande mole di dati. I computer nelle sue storie e nelle sue saghe sono quasi dei personaggi aggiunti, sono i motori della storia che a volte permettono all’uomo di progredire, in alcuni casi lo sostituiscono, in altri sono usati come contraltare rispetto all’irrazionalità umana. In ogni caso non devono mancare. 5. La Robotica Non ha un ruolo centrale nel Ciclo della Fondazione, ma la robotica di Asimov è una delle più importanti rivoluzioni nel mondo della letteratura e della fantascienza. Fu lo scrittore il primo a pensare un robot che non fosse una sorta di Frankenstein di metallo né un oggetto stupido che l’uomo poteva manipolare a piacimento. I robot di Asimov, basati sul cervello positronico, sono esseri al servizio dell’uomo, non sono pericolosi né ridicoli, ma anticipano di molti anni i concetti della piena automazione che affrontiamo oggi e furono probabilmente l’ispirazione di moltissimi altri robot famosi della storia, come Astro Boy o Data. Per Asimov, a differenza di quelli di Philip K. Dick, che li eleverà al rango di androidi, non hanno emozioni, a meno che non ci sia un malfunzionamento, e sono coerenti con la visione scientifica dell’autore, le cui tre leggi della robotica (più la legge 0) sono ancora oggi valide linee guida per la creazione di una Intelligenza artificiale.

Exposure of subjects to ground-based models of space flight conditions, such as hindlimb unloading of rodents or chronic bed rest of humans, has also resulted in changes in the immune system. The relationship of these changes to compromised resistance to infection or tumors in space flight has not been fully established, but results from model systems suggest that alterations in the immune system that occur in space flight conditions may be related to decreases in resistance to infection. The establishment of such a relationship could lead to the development of countermeasures that could prevent or ameliorate any compromises in resistance to infection resulting from exposure to space flight conditions. An understanding of the mechanisms of space flight conditions effects on the immune response and development of countermeasures to prevent them could contribute to the development of treatments for compromised immunity on earth.

Old Disk, is that old processor that generates synthetic sounds, mixed with the rhythm of the future. That rhythm that you can listen to in some clubs, but not the common ones, but quite those of the most colorful and technological metropolis in the world, Tokyo. Glitch Dance, or Glitch Hop, is a style that recalls broken processor sounds, melodies break, and are generated as system errors. Old Disk, sounds like this, between electronic vocals, and strips of sound effects, broken, that take shape and rhythm, regenerated and mixed, with functioning systems. Too complicated? Then you just have to press play, to immerse yourself in a culture that we now know in part, but not in full. Tokyo, like all the other cities in Japan, has always been my good source of inspiration for my pieces, together with the USA, a riot of electronic fantasies, which leave room for hundreds and hundreds of rhythmic nuances. I love to mix cultures, I love to combine thoughts and minds that are different from mine, to learn, discover and create something unique. I'm not an artist The medal I wanted to make uses the most important explorers: Marco Polo, land exploration, Cristoforo Colombo, sailor and explorer, Yuri Gagarin, first astronaut. They all look at a very horrible drawing of Sputnik-1, the first man-made satellite. This side represents exploration. The other, with the writing "Gold Medal for Space Exploration", represents Earth, all of us.
