I'd be more satisfied if a starship is built first before a colony is even started. Currently there are prototypes being designed and tested in theory with a few early warp engine concepts that can go at least half the speed of light. Personally, I do partially agree that I probably won't be alive to see a space station built for 100k people. But to not see scientist, engineers, designers, etc not be going to space....well, that I do see as a possibility. While the NASA space program does put their astronauts through a rigorous training, that doesn't mean that commercial space companies will have the same requirements. Yes, people will need to be vetted medically in some form or another to be able to survive launches, and some time in space. If we do have a Mars colony, or base on the moon in the next 20 years, we'll be needing workers to be there to help build. Right now, I am confident it's a lot more realistic of civilian people being able to go to those worlds than 30 years ago.
