It seems almost insensitive to start to have a deep dive into the science behind Monday's earthquake events in Turkey. More than 22,000 people are already confirmed dead and an unknown number still lie trapped, with the window for their rescue closing rapidly. And yet the science will go on. The insights gleaned from this event will save lives in the future. Take a look at the map on this page. It is the most precise yet produced of how the ground lurched in response to the enormous energies that were unleashed. The data behind it was acquired in the early hours of Friday by the European Union's Sentinel-1A satellite as it traversed north to south over Turkey at an altitude of 700km (435 miles). The Sentinel carries a radar instrument that is able to sense the ground in all weathers, day and night. It is routinely scanning this earthquake-prone region of the world, tracing the often very subtle changes in elevation at the Earth's surface. Except, of course, the changes on Monday were not subtle at all; they were dramatic. The ground bent, buckled and in places ripped apart. Live: BBC coverage of the Turkey quakes Why was the earthquake so deadly? How do rescue teams reach people under rubble? Researchers use the technique of interferometry to compare "before" and "after" views. But you do not really need to be an expert to see the consequences for Turkey in the latest Sentinel map. The red colours here describe movement towards the satellite since it last flew over the country; the blue colours record the movement away from the spacecraft. It is abundantly clear how the ground has been deformed along and near the East Anatolian Fault line. For both the Magnitude 7.8 quake that struck first on Monday at 01:17 GMT and the Magnitude 7.5 event at 10:24, the motion is "left-lateral". That is to say: whichever side of the fault you are on, the other side has moved to the left. And by several metres in places. The shocking thing is that the lines of rupture have gone right through settlements; in lots of places they will have gone right through buildings. The magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 earthquakes that struck southern Türkiye and western Syria on February 6, 2023, caused widespread destruction in both countries. The initial earthquake emanated from a fault 18 kilometers (11 miles) below the land surface. The shallow depth meant the earthquake produced violent shaking that affected areas hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter. The first quake was followed by a 7.5 magnitude event about nine hours later, as well as hundreds of smaller aftershocks. As news of the event spread, scientists at space agencies around the world—including NASA—began processing and analyzing satellite data relevant to the event. “These were very large and powerful earthquakes that ruptured all the way up to the surface over a long series of fault segments,” said Eric Fielding, a geophysicist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. “This generated extremely strong shaking over a very large area that hit many cities and towns full of people. The rupture length and magnitude of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake was similar to the 1906 earthquake that destroyed San Francisco.” The preliminary damage proxy map above shows parts of the cities of Türkoğlu, Kahramanmaraş, and Nurdaği. Dark red pixels represent areas likely to have severe damage to buildings, homes, and infrastructure or changes to the landscape, while orange and yellow areas are moderately or partially damaged. Each pixel measures about 30 meters across (about the size of a baseball infield). The map is derived from data collected by the PALSAR-2 on the Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2) on February 8, 2023. The satellite carries a synthetic aperture radar, a sensor that sends pulses of microwaves toward Earth’s surface and listens for reflections of those waves to map the landscape, including buildings. By comparing the February 8 data to observations made by the same satellite before the earthquake (on April 7, 2021, and April 6, 2022), scientists tracked the changes and began to identify damaged areas. The ALOS-2 data were provided by Sentinel Asia and analyzed by the Earth Observatory of Singapore - Remote Sensing Lab in collaboration with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech. “The map covers only the central part of the affected area due to the narrow, 70-kilometer swath of the ALOS-2 fine-beam data used, but it includes the epicenters of both the magnitude 7.8 main earthquake and the magnitude 7.5 aftershock,” said Fielding. “Note that the time intervals between the ALOS-2 acquisitions are up to a year apart, so the accuracy of the damage proxy map may be lower in areas of vegetation, such as in the mountains, due to seasonal variations.” Some of the areas marked as damaged in vegetated areas may not have been damaged, and some areas showing no damage in vegetated areas may be damaged. Members of the disasters program area of NASA’s Earth Science Applied Sciences, as well as their national and international collaborators, are in the process of sharing the damage proxy map and the data used to generate it with organizations such as the U.S. State Department, the California Seismic Safety Commission, Miyamoto Global Disaster Relief, and the World Bank. The team is also participating in ongoing coordination calls hosted by the U.S. Agency for International Development to assess the needs of stakeholders in the region and provide scientific expertise to support risk assessment and recovery efforts. “We’re monitoring this event closely,” said Shanna McClain, the manager of the program. “In addition to mapping damage to the extent possible from satellites, we’re using satellites to track increased landslide risks, power outages, and weather that could pose challenges to response efforts.” As new data become available, the team is posting near real-time imagery and data products related to the earthquake on its mapping portal. For thousands of years, athletic competition has been a staple of human culture; everywhere we go, we bring sports with us. Freediving competitions push athletes to the depths of human endurance, and wingsuit racers leap from planes in pursuit of glory and adrenaline. Given our proclivity for athletics, it’s only natural that sports will eventually make their way to the final frontier. And if there’s one authority on the matter, it’s former astronaut and NFL player Leland Melvin. In the third episode of I Need My Space, Inverse’s podcast about all things extraterrestrial, Melvin tells hosts Rae Paoletta and Steve Ward that he definitely envisions people playing sports in space. A few astronauts played badminton on the International Space Station (ISS) in February 2018, and Melvin says that one of his friends has already established rules for a space sport called “Float Ball.” “I think it was [meant to be played] on the Moon or Mars, but you had this one-sixth or one-third G thing going, so you could actually bounce up and float like really high,” Melvin says. “While you were floating, the opponents and your fans could actually guide you where you needed to go.” It’s a bit like basketball, but, you know, with much more hang time. Playing sports in space won’t be an easy task because simply moving in zero gravity has a rather steep learning curve: “Your brain and your body are really trying to figure out how to move,” Melvin says. It’s difficult enough to navigate the ISS without knocking over important equipment, let alone have the body control to catch a pass or kick a ball. Sadly, the insurmountable obstacle of zero gravity means that some sports will never make it out of this world. For Melvin, there’s one sport at the top of the list — curling. “I’m not a fan of curling, but I’m respectful of their craft,” Melvin said. What is World Space Week? World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events: October 4, 1957: Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration October 10, 1967: The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activites of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies. Where and how is World Space Week celebrated? World Space Week consists of space education and outreach events held by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and astronomy clubs around the world in a common timeframe. These synchronized space events attract greater public and media attention. This official goal comprises various sets of operative goals which serve as some kind of strategy or model to fulfil the club's, federation, organitations purpose.
