As an outstanding network of 407 members from 71 countries, including all leading space agencies, companies, societies, associations, museums and institutes worldwide the IAF has been able to promote space activities, to develop new technologies, and to promote awareness about space to government and societies since its creation in 1951. With over 165 years of cumulative on-orbit experience across 48 distinct operational satellites and another 24 under construction, smaller satellites built by SFL consistently push the performance envelope and disrupt the traditional cost paradigm. The SFL line of advanced smaller satellites, ranging in size from 3─500kg, are built with advanced power systems, stringent attitude control and high-volume data capacity that are striking relative to the budget. SFL also arranges launches globally and maintains a mission control center accessing ground stations worldwide. The new product line of high performance CubeSats recently introduced by SFL leverages established quality and heritage platform technologies while addressing the need for aggressive, disruptive missions and satellites that are as small as possible to meet highly constrained business demands. The Future of Space Medicine 15th of October, 2021 for the Space Medicine conference Address: Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3PJ, United Kingdom This event will be carried out in a hybrid format. The offline session will be held in Oxford at the Department of Engineering of the University of Oxford (LR1). The online session will go right after the offline presentations via Zoom (either online or in-person attendance requires preliminary Zoom registration). The whole event, including the panel discussion, will be translated online. The recording will be available a week after the event. Understanding of new technologies emerging for space medicine will become ever-more important with the soon-to-come plunging of launch prices, enabling thousands of people, many not necessarily in the best of physical health, to visit space in the near future. In addition, with that much activity, the chances of accidents will vastly increase, and many of them will need to be dealt with in space, because waiting for an ambulance to get back to Earth may be too late. But we haven’t developed protocols or procedures for surgery or burn treatments in free fall (though ironically, that may be the best environment in which to treat a burn victim, and conceivably, there could even be orbital hospitals for such cases). The term “International Space Station astronaut” refers to all astronauts who have traveled to, or stayed on board, the International Space Station (ISS) in the years 1998–2013. These include Space Transportation Shuttle (STS) mission #astronauts, Russian #cosmonauts, all crew #members who traveled via Russian Soyuz, and all paid #spaceflight participants. Analyses of demographic and mission information were obtained from publicly accessible government #space agencies and military websites for female and male astronauts and cosmonauts from 1998–2013. The key observation is that women are still underrepresented among astronauts. Access to Space for All Initiative A single opportunity has limited impact but a structured initiative has long lasting effects permeating all societal pillars The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) has conducted capacity-building activities such as conferences and training courses for almost 50 years. However, we have noticed an increasing demand for hands on expertise related to access to space. To answer to the increasing demand for hands-on capacity-building, UNOOSA started to provide hands on opportunities in collaboration with various partners back in 2012 and, in 2018, launched the Access to Space for All Initiative which organizes all the hands-on opportunities offered by UNOOSA in three different tracks of increasing complexity, aiming at developing capacity in different space-related areas from A to Z. History of famous firsts in space WRITTEN BY ELIZABETH JACKSON FEBRUARY 22, 2021 In its first manned rocket launch, SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket on May 30 is set to bring NASA astronauts to the International Space Station. The spaceflight, taking off from the same launch pad used to bring people to the moon, represents other milestones, as well: It's the first time a private company is sending people to space; it's also the first space launch since 2011 to leave from the United States. The launch was scheduled for May 27 but was rescheduled because of rain. In honor of this historic moment, Stacker used a combination of news, government, and other archival reports to curate a gallery of 50 other historic firsts in space. Although the idea of galaxies beyond the Earth’s atmosphere has long entranced human beings, it wasn’t until the second half of the 20th century that space flight became a reality, enabling humans to see beyond the Earth—and, in the case of the first photographs taken of the Earth—to see the Earth itself. We tend to think of the middle-to-end of the 20th century as a time when many of the firsts in space occurred, and this is for good reason. The Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union was a major factor influencing the proliferation of space activity.
