The Space Economy 2020 Outcome Report,https://www.unoosa.org/documents/pdf/Space%20Economy/Space_Economy_Initiative_2020_Outcome_Report_Jan_2021.pdf published in January 2021, provides an overview of all UNOOSA Space Economy 2020 virtual events. From June to September 2020, UNOOSA started the first space economy awareness-raising activities by organizing a series of seven virtual events. These have been fundamental to bringing established and emerging space economy practitioners together in an equal and inclusive setting. Through the series, the subject of 'space economy' was broken down into core elements: building public support for space activities; how to scale up; accessing finance; international cooperation; the nexus between government, industry, and academia; and space economy in the COVID-19 context. The 2020 Outcome Report provides an overview of all these topics and includes the insights shared by international and national experts. Thanks to the engagement of these experts and over 1,500 participants, the launch of the Space Economy Initiative was truly successful. As we look to 2021, we are making plans to scale up the Space Economy Initiative. In this next stage, we plan to develop space economy capacity-building services for the Member States, both through direct advisory services and the development of online e-learning materials. In this context, we look forward to continuing working with stakeholders who are interested in deepening the relationship with the United Nations on space economy matters and support the scaling up of these activities going forward. Introducing the Initiative The global space sector is thriving. Over 65 countries have operated at least one satellite. Political and economic capital being invested in the space environment by governments and commercial entities is at record levels. With an increasing number of public and private actors involved in the development and provision of space infrastructure and related products and services, the global space economy has been a consistent source of growth, exceeding $400 billion for the first time in 2018. Space economy has featured regularly in the work of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). It is a term to capture the economic benefits of a dynamic space sector and the role space can play in prosperous socio-economic development. While most space economy activities originate from space-faring countries, emerging space-faring nations do not benefit as much as they could from this area. By leveraging on its experience supporting international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space, UNOOSA works to bring the international space community together in support of emerging space-faring nations to take part in the global space economy responsibly and sustainably. As we look to the future, with many countries considering how to 'build back better', it is clear that healthy, dynamic space economies can play a huge role in accelerating sustainable socio-economic development. The Space Economy initiative unpacks this complex topic, breaking down the issue to core elements, providing a road map on how to build a strong space economy that delivers tangible socio-economic benefits. Space Economy Webinar Series A series of webinars focused on the "Space Economy" explores these issues in more detail. Throughout the series, we draw on public and private-sector experts to help us unpack how different countries are strengthening their respective space sectors. Across the series, we focus on the most fundamental elements of a healthy, responsible, and sustainable space economy. The webinar series provides a platform to share insights from commercial space entities on how to go from the 'start-up' phase to being well-established. Further, we also look at financing space activities, exploring success stories on how mixed public-private funding models are helping space economies thrive. The series touches upon the nexus between government, industry and academia, and how to leverage this nexus to maximise innovation and growth in the space economy. Finally, we also look at what this all means outside the immediate domestic context and the link between growing space economies at the national level and supporting responsible and sustainable space activities at the international level. All these considerations are taken in the context of current global developments, including with regards to how space economies can play a key role in responses to COVID-19 and supporting socio-economic development as countries seek to 'build-back-better'. Turkey to introduce national space program today  09 Feb 2021 Turkey will publicize its national space program on Tuesday. Prepared by the Turkish Space Agency, the program will reveal Turkey's goals and projects in space. The event will be held today at Bestepe National Congress and Culture Center in the capital Ankara at 7 p.m. local time (1900GMT). Led by the Industry and Technology Ministry, the program will be introduced in a meeting. Noting that the program was prepared and will be carried out by the Turkey Space Agency (TUA), Erdogan said Turkey is opening the door to the sky journey of its civilization that pioneered justice, morality, and peace in the world for centuries. "The primary and most important mission of the program is to make the first contact with the Moon in our republic's centennial year [2023]," Erdogan said. The country will gather satellite production activities under a single authority, he added. Under its national space program, Turkey aims to set up a regional positioning and timing system, Erdogan noted. Turkey is planning to establish a spaceport while ensuring access to space, he stressed. Another goal of the program is to increase the country's competitiveness in space by investing in space weather, meteorology, Erdogan said. Turkey will boost its efficiency in astronomical observations and follow-up of space objects from the Earth, he noted. Under the program, Turkey will further develop the economy of its space industry, Erdogan stressed. A Space Technology Development Region to welcome domestic and foreign investors will be established, the president also said. Noting that the country will develop effective and competent human resources in the field of space, Erdogan said the "final goal is to send a Turkish citizen to space with a scientific mission." Set out in the first 100-day action plan unveiled after the Justice and Development (AK) Party's victory in elections in June, TUA was established in December 2018 with a presidential decree. Touching on the government's works in the field of space, Erdogan said 2.1 billion Turkish liras (nearly $300 million) had been provided for 56 projects about satellite, space, launching systems, and space equipment in the last 18 years. With a 30-year lifetime, Turkey's fifth-generation satellite, the Türksat 5A, will secure the country’s orbital rights, an executive at global aerospace company Airbus said Monday. “Türksat 5A will secure the orbital rights of Turkey,” said Jean-Marc Nasr, head of space systems for Airbus. Turkey is expected to send the new-generation communication satellite, equipped with the latest technology and higher capacity, into orbit later this month. The broadcast satellite will provide television services and improve broadband data networks. Citing a production contract for the Türksat 5A between Türksat Satellite Communications and Cable TV Operations Company (Türksat) and Airbus Defense and Space, Nasr told Anadolu Agency (AA) that efforts to produce the satellite had started immediately after the deal was signed on Nov. 9, 2017. The final integration phase of the satellite has been completed despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Nasr said, adding that it could be launched at the end of this month. However, the launch date may be delayed due to various reasons including meteorological conditions and technical launcher requirements, he noted. “Latest technologies used in fifth-generation satellites allow a significant increase in the lifetime of the satellite while reducing its launching weight,” Nasr said. He added that the Türksat 5A would be able to perform more comprehensive operations thanks to its longer lifetime. “While the capacity of Turkey's fifth-generation satellite Türksat 5A will be 45% up, its lifetime will be two times more compared to previous generations,” Nasr highlighted. Noting that the satellite would sit in fixed orbit on the broadcast band of the 31st meridian east, Nasr said it would weigh 3.5 tons at launch. The satellite will cover Turkey, the Middle East, Europe and large regions of Africa. It will provide television services and improve broadband data networks. Türksat 5A was built in collaboration between Türksat, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) and Airbus Defense and Space. It is scheduled for launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the U.S. state of Florida. Nasr praised the efforts of Türksat and the Turkish engineers, who have been involved for months in the satellite's production, saying: “Our ties with Türksat are based on trust and professionalism.” "We are working with very qualified engineers and learn a lot from each other," he said. He underlined that the fact that production kept going despite COVID-19-related lockdowns and travel restrictions showed the cooperation and mutual trust between the two companies.  Another Airbus-Türksat satellite 5B is also under construction. Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Adil Karaismailoğlu recently said the Türksat 5B is expected to be sent into orbit in the second quarter of 2021. The country is also working on building its own Türksat 6A. The production is ongoing and is using completely domestic sourcing in the capital Ankara. It is a product of the collaboration between the Transportation and Infrastructure Ministry as well as organizations and companies such as leading defense firm Aselsan, TAI and CTech, along with Türksat and the country’s top scientific body, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBITAK). It will place Turkey among 10 countries capable of producing their own satellites. The contract for Türksat 6A was signed on Dec. 15, 2014. The Perseverance Rover Landing Perseverance will touch down on Mars on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021, at approximately 12:30 p.m. PST (3:30 p.m. EST). During landing, the rover plunges through the thin Martian atmosphere, with the heat shield first, at a speed of over 12,000 mph (about 20,000 kph). A parachute and powered descent slow the rover down to about 2 mph (three-fourths of a meter per second). A large sky crane then lowers the rover on three bridle cords to land softly on six wheels. Landing at Jezero Crater The rover’s new home is Jezero Crater, a large impact crater about 28 miles wide (45 kilometers wide) just north of the Martian equator. Jezero once contained a lake, which scientists think is one of the most ideal places to find evidence of ancient microbial life. If life exists anywhere else in our solar system, chances are, it might be at Jezero Crater. The main question Perseverance is trying to answer is: Was there ever ancient life on Mars? To answer that question, the rover will collect and store the most compelling rock and soil samples for return to Earth by a future mission. Once on Earth, scientists can use a variety of sophisticated instruments, many of them too large and bulky to transport to Mars, to help answer this question. While Jupiter and Saturn align about once every 20 years, this year's conjunction marks the first time since 1623 that the two gas giants have passed this close to one another in our sky — and nearly 800 years since skywatchers were able to witness the event at night. After a Moon city is established the 'Moonies' will "want the prestige of holding a major world event." These Games will, of course, take place on the moon. One of my favorite things about this image is the "special equipment" needed to replace the bar. At first glance I assumed the bubble enclosing the man in the vehicle was to protect him and that air was being pumped in. I then realized that the athletes don't need the same type of protection. A reoccurring element of the paleo-future is the expectation of superfluous design. That is to say, we make things appear different and beautiful because we can. With a few design modifications the utility vehicle could be much more practical, but where's the fun in that? I guess that's why we fall in love with the future and why dystopian images are that much more jarring. Under Armour designs pilots' spacesuits for Virgin Galactic's first commercial spaceflight : US sportswear brand Under Armour has designed the spacesuits and footwear that Virgin Galactic's pilots will wear for its first commercial spaceflight later this month. According to the brand, the spacesuits are designed to make the pilots feel confident while ensuring they are understated enough to not be distracting. Turkey: Over 100 rescued from debris after quake Death toll rises to 39, while 885 injured after magnitude 6.6 earthquake in Aegean Dilara Hamit | 31.10.2020 ANKARA The Turkish president on Saturday announced that 103 people were rescued from debris after an earthquake hit Turkey's Aegean provinces on Friday. Recep Tayyip Erdogan inspected the earthquake zone in the coastal Aegean province of Izmir, and the authorities at the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) Coordination Center briefed the president on the work carried out after the quake. So far, 885 people have been injured, said Erdogan, while the death toll from the quake rose to 39, according to AFAD. Erdogan also said that a grant-in-aid of 24 million Turkish liras (over $2.87-million) has been sent so far to the quake-hit area and more will be provided based on need. He stressed that 35 mobile base stations have been shipped to the region, with 25 already installed, adding that after all debris is removed, construction work will start to build houses for those whose homes collapsed. While the debris removal work continues, the Environment and Urbanization Ministry will immediately take steps in these areas, just like after earthquakes in eastern Elazig and Malatya provinces, Erdogan noted. During the process, home rents of citizens will be paid and their settlements will be provided, he said, adding that the Environment and Urbanization Ministry along with the Family, Labor and Social Services Ministry will compensate people affected by the quake for the cost for their damaged belongings. Erdogan said the National Education Ministry would make a decision whether or not to extend the suspension of education in the area. In the way, a child from two different races and cultures is usually unique and especially beautiful, so the child of space and fashion is. Let’s call this child ‘‘Spashion’’! In this article I am going to attempt and answer the question if ‘‘Spashion’’ could be the beginning of a new trend or has this trend already been existing? But, firstly, let me talk about the definition. Spashion is a noun that combines two other nouns, specifically, a beginning of one and the end of another: Spa(ce) and (Fa)shion. Both fields are large enough to contain many topics and discussions inside each of them. On the other hand, their combination gets together forming something related to both and, in the same time, something completely different and unique. If a child is born from an African-American mother and Caucasian father, can you claim the child is black or white? The child would be a mix of both. We can compare the situation with Space and Fashion, when Spashion is really something related but completely different. If a child is sharing 50% of his/her DNA with each biological father and mother. Then we can say, Spashion is equally sharing its characteristics with both Space and Fashion. Have you heard of the Space Age? That’s the time in the history in the end of 1950s and 1960s when the space race between countries began with the development of new technologies and nuclear weapons as well as the cold war after the Second World War. The actual human involved space race started with the first manned mission when the USSR successfully sent a spacecraft with Yuri Gagarin around the Earth’s orbit on April 12, 1961. This event and the following space related missions then inspired designers from all over the world including Paco Rabanne, Courreges, and Pierre Cardin to refresh their styles with unique ‘‘spaceish’’ elements. There has been a huge competition from space technologies to ‘’being the first one’’ to discover something on the Moon or Mars as well as from media battles to intense discussions on multiple space related blogs. So, the fashion industry is not staying away! A well-known brand, Coach, recently launched a new line with the space theme accessories where they include many space pieces in their designs as well as simply illustrating spacecrafts. Another example from high fashion who gave birth to a ‘‘Spashion moment’’ in 2017 is famous Chanel. They presented their new line in March of that year in a trademous style by showing a custom Chanel rocket at Paris Fashion Week. The clothing represented the space very much showcasing cosmic blankets, shiny boots, astronaut prints, and planet-shaped handbags. You might not be able to get in a spacecraft wearing these items at the moment but you surely will feel closer to space. I, personally, always wanted to have a NASA shirt or a hat. It just sounds so big as the organization is working on something special as nobody else does (except other space agencies like Russian Roscosmos or Chinese CNSA). I believe recent space events will influence modern designers from all over the world to continue the Space Age! Don’t you think so? And the child, Spashion, will soon grow and become an adult giving birth to new kids! Space economy has featured regularly in the work of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). It is a term to capture the economic benefits of a dynamic space sector and the role space can play in prosperous socio-economic development. While most space economy activities originate from space-faring countries, emerging space-faring nations do not benefit as much as they could from this area. By leveraging on its experience supporting international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space, UNOOSA works to bring the international space community together in support of emerging space-faring nations to take part in the global space economy responsibly and sustainably. As we look to the future, with many countries considering how to 'build back better', it is clear that healthy, dynamic space economies can play a huge role in accelerating sustainable socio-economic development. The Space Economy initiative unpacks this complex topic, breaking down the issue to core elements, providing a road map on how to build a strong space economy that delivers tangible socio-economic benefits.
