Depending on the definition, our Solar system has either 8 or 110 planets. The question of "What is a planet ?" is still up for debate. Personally I feel that downgrading Pluto was a mistake, and agree with much of the sentiment in the following article. Scientists make the case ...

I have 7 suggestions to amend the recently announced proposal guide. 1) In the first page in "Proposal Formatting", you state that acceptable submission formats for stand-alone materials are .DOC/.DOCX files. As these are Microsoft-owned formats which are not held to a fixed standard this may present problems in the ...

It occurs to me that a tech-support thread for browser helpers such as translator extensions and tools would be useful. Several options are available, and many with multiple engines, which often help with translating sentences that do not make sense.

Google is about as good as it gets for translational abilities, AFAIK - and that still leaves much to be desired, in terms of it's transational abilities. I'm ignoring the security concerns of having everything you read/write travel through a third party that is mining user data. Translate.google.com doesn't even ...

One of the essential features that a new theory must have is "consistency". It must take into account the successes of previous models. For instance, Special Relativity coincides with Newtonian predictions at small fractions of c. The curvatures of General Relativity are consistent with Special Relativity in flat space, so Special Relativity becomes a special case of General Relativity. General Relativity might become a special case of some more subtle model, but to say that it's just wrong is crude and misleading.
It's important to take on account that almost everything (if not everything) we know in science is a theory, and as such is subject to being wrong. A model is presented and if that model can explain and accurately predict certain phenomena and be able to replicate it through ...
It's important to take on account that almost everything (if not everything) we know in science is a theory, and as such is subject to being wrong. A model is presented and if that model can explain and accurately predict certain phenomena and be able to replicate it through experimentation then it's valid.
Therefore a model can be wrong and it shouldn't be followed blindly. Of course that a model can be proven to be certain over and over becoming a reliable basis on which support further experiments and theories, but my point is that it shouldn't surprise us when a model is defied by any new results of experimentation that contradict said model, as it is in the nature of the theory and model the chance (and probability) of it being wrong.
Just a thought that I think we should keep in mind when discussing scientific matters.
General Relativity has been tested over and over. It also predicted black holes before any physical evidence and also dark energy. It has not been superceded.
