We could do something even without the UN recognition, but the point is that Dr.Igor explicitly said that it's one of our objectives. I think it's necessary in order to grant us some degree of credibility and influence, which will be quite crucial for the development of Agardia. The point is, how we get the recognition? This is truly a first, at the moment we are just a little bit more than a web community, we have no territory therefore stable population living in it, and we don't want just recognition, we want to be a member of the UN. In my opinion it's a long way, Let me explain, the Unitet Nations are going to evaluate a possible member, but it has to be a nation in the first place, what is a Nation then? The very definition of nation is: - a country, especially when thought of as a large group of people living in one area with their own government, language, traditions, etc. - a large group of people of the same race who share the same language, traditions, and history, but who might not all live in one area We just don't fit in any of these definitions, plus consider that: - 2.The Security Council considers the application. Any recommendation for admission must receive the affirmative votes of 9 of the 15 members of the Council, provided that none of its five permanent members — China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America — have voted against the application. Just try to think of what we are at the moment to them, as I've said, a little more than a web community; from their point of view, giving us a place among them would be a quite dangerous precedent. With that being said, in conclusion, as much as I like this project, this is going to take more than just a website and papers, we need real political influence, a lot more money and possibly a physical place, could be as little as a house, but something to start with, then, someday, we could send something in space and start from there, but it's a long, long way unless Dr.Igor and all of us, decide that we don't want\need them to recognize us for now but only in a distant future where we'll have an extra-atmospheric station\city. I think that Dr.Igor wants all of the UN thing mainly to promote his ‘Universal space law’ and ‘astropolitics’, and then to give Asgardia more credibility in order to attract people and investors.

The non-recognition of Taiwan is a diplomatic courtesy extended to China because China refused to abide by international law unless the UN pretended that the right to self-determination did not apply to Taiwan. Without this concession, China would have been (and continue to be) in contravention of Article 1 of the UN Charter, which would have destroyed the legitimacy of the UNSC by having a permanent member formally flouting the UN Charter itself. China received the permanent UNSC seat in part as a way to bring them in compliance with international law and in part because amending the Charter to give the seat to someone else has always been politically infeasible. There are numerous other examples of functional states without UN recognition and/or without recognition from most/any UN members. And of course historically governments existed just fine without the UN.

All post brings a second thought. I guess a country can maintain activities being or not part of the UN. As an example and correct me if I'm wrong this happens in China, one part of China is recognized by the UN and other small part of it is not, even though both are countries. People live and produce in both places. The post and comments makes me wonder. If the goal is to be a new century modern space nation, for starters I think there might be a formal asgard territory on earth because is being said not we all are going to be space engineers we might have to enroll and do different activities to support the nation as any other culture or country does. So all comes to either is recognized or not, will asgardians have a land to start the project from scratch to finance and create the foundations of a space nation?

I agree with EyeR. An idea is a thought. Asgardia is supposed to be a Country, with a Constitution, a variety of Ministries, and thousands of citizens. That's a tad more than an idea.

I like the overall tone... "idea" isn't definite enough for my liking. As far as I'm concerned, it's possible. If it happens or not is just if we make it happen or not.

By the right definitions of intelligence, planning for such contingencies would be assured. However, until we actually have need for, setting up a specific section to deal with - along with iconography, badging, specialist equipments etc - is considerably a waste of resources in the effort. And still, considering how hostile humans are, why would our existing defence forces structure simply be unable to cope?

EyeR, Once again, I'm seeing posts by you advertising for intelligence and still... The problem with acting after encountering a problem is the time we lose in the process. Issuing preparation for defense purposes after encountering other, dangerous life forms might result a fatal outcome in the process of not being ready. Just look up anti-colonial extremists. We can get a lot of flak from them, or even just people who want our resources or to extort our government for money. The reason regular officers of the defense forces won't be able to is because they aren't trained or equipped to. If every officer was trained in counterterrorism and walked around in tactical gear 24/7, that might put our citizens, our primary concern, in a state of disease, in addition to raising training times to an absurd high. We need people who are specially trained above and beyond and can respond to such deadly situations with precision, fluidity, and skill. But I digress, the point of this isn't to discuss if we need a CTU or not, this is for iconography.

Ultimately, I personally politically favour Anarchy. A lack of a system can be a system too - and an effective one. At the end of the day, you shouldn't need someone to tell you what's right and what's wrong - you know. You'd also not be really requiring anyone to tell you what to do - you know that too. However, I'm able to accept that some people are just completely unable to cope with taking social responsibility for their own actions/inactions. Even with more than a million citizens, it's still possible for them to decide for themselves. Via a forum structure such as this, we can argue amongst ourselves upon the various merits concerning decisions for a set period of time - assuming this is nothing desperately urgent - and then collectively vote. I'll agree with the opposition to decisions principle, but think it should be set as a % instead of a solid number. Say 60%. To assume that up until the next elections at least the 1'st 100k have a say, then one hundred would be only 1% or so - and not a good representation of the larger societies veiws. 100/600,000 is pretty insignificant. Should a structure develop wherin individuals make their own decisions, then the role of the ministries would be akin to that of mods in forums. An adjudicator ensuring productive conversation, and in cases where no clear agreements can be reached, the arbiter of the ultimate decision. I think proposal for dismissal should also require greater than 100 people - again a fixed percentage, 60% sounds like a good minimal.
