Despite the rise of online advertising, the Super Bowl is still advertising’s biggest day, with major brands throwing down as much as $5.6m for a 30-second spot. Fox Sports stated that it sold out of its inventory back in November. Advertisers will no doubt be hoping for a better game than last season’s snoozer, with a close match extending through all four quarters to get the most from their investments. After an array of stark white, a rainbow of color and a yellow brick road a tad bit too on the nose, the final look in Virgil Abloh’s debut Spring/Summer 2019 Menswear collection was a shocking—but in hindsight, natural—departure. In a fully reflective metallic poncho, Playboi Carti strode out proud making a bold statement about both Abloh’s new position and exactly what goes down at the end of the metaphorical rainbow. Apart from bringing the show to its logical conclusion, Abloh touched on a trend permeating throughout menswear: space. While for Abloh—whose meteoric success and global recognition has made him a household name—exiting the atmosphere is the only conceivable place to go, for the rest of the industry, the final frontier may be a guiding light as a source of inspiration. The Space Age trend began in the mid-to-late '60s with designers like Courrèges, Rabanne, and Pierre Cardin, who were inspired by the global space race. (The Soviets landed in 1959, and Buzz Aldrin, who is featured in Marchetto's column, natch, took his historic first step in ten years later.) In fact, Courrèges demonstrated such an interest in the future of space travel, that he received a personal invitation from NASA to come visit Cape Canaveral in Florida. Around the same time, Rabanne also designed the costumes for Barbarella, a sci-fi film starring Jane Fonda, who plays a member of the "United Earth government" sent to space in the "41st century" to find an evil scientist plotting to end humanity. On July 20, 1969, NASA astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, and Michael Collins successfully completed the Apollo 11 mission which culminated in Armstrong taking that fateful space walk on the moon’s surface, telling those listening, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Armstrong’s legendary accomplishment is chronicled in Damian Chazelle’s latest film, First Man (opening today), which the Hollywood Reporter has called a, “sober, contemplative picture [with] emotional involvement, visceral tension, and yes, even suspense, in addition to stunning technical craft.” Although the six American flags which have been left on the moon since Apollo 11 have been confirmed to have turned white due to alternating days of searing sunlight and 100° heat and days of numbing-cold -150°, there’s no mistaking the technicolor impact that the mission had on various facets of industries. Since the days of the space race, designers like like André Courrèges, Paco Rabanne, and Pierre Cardin, have attempted to sartorially predict what the future held for society – whether forecasting the daily uniforms for the masses — or more esoteric fare for those on the fringes as drastic changes occur in society.
