One particularly appealing aspect of planning for extraterrestrial living is than accessibility can be planned into architecture, culture, amenities, economics, politics and much else. The thing is, it is easily overlooked unless people with disabilities are actively engaged in the process of nation building, and we are aware that in the melting pot of earthly cultures represented in Asgardia has a wide variety of attitudes and approaches to disability and accessibility. How do we work on this together?

Seas, lakes and other large bodies of water have long excited the human imagination across many cultures. I drew this imagined scene whilst staying on the east coast of Yorkshire, UK. The vastness of space is similarly compelling, I think, but the lack of a universal orientation - an agreed 'up' sets art a different challenge. This amuses me in sci fi as most imagined starships have an obvious 'up' in their design, and when they meet (either on friendly terms or in battle) their 'ups' tend to co-ordinate, though there is no reason why they must. Anyway, ponder wide horizons and possible encounters as you will.

During 2020 I painted this in a number of layers over several months. Inspired by concepts of seeing in a way which defies time, dimensions and human limitation. It is not narrative, except that I suspect the viewer may well wish to add their own. For some reason the image has been rotated 90 degrees, but I must admit that I am enjoying looking at it this way! The tail of the flame-like shapes should point towards the top of the canvas.
