This article briefly discusses my recent experiences with the press following some publications that I was interviewed for and raises concerns over the narrative.

Recently, there have been a couple of publications that have contacted me for my opinions as an active Asgardian and because I’m running for a community leadership position. They’ve all been writing articles about Asgardia, Taxes, diplomacy and our goals.

It struck me just how difficult it must be for them to write a well rounded article and try to make sense of all that information that’s swirling around about Asgardia.

Each time that I’ve been contacted about Asgardia – I’ve provided a very lengthy succinct response to their questions and each time, 99% of what I said has had to be cut.

Due to the issue of space and time (not in the same way that Asgardians think about space and time.) my very succinct answers have been boiled down to ‘soundbites’. Now, I don’t blame the authors for this, but it does make it difficult to have a meaningful narrative on Asgardia.

I will provide an example of the extent that things are getting condensed.

Question:
“The specific issue of the low number of women among Asgardians (15% per cent of the 100,000 who approved the constitution, Lena told me) has come up. Does that bother you personally? Wouldn’t that be a problem if there was a colony in space with only 15% women?”

My answer:
“I think that's something that can be thought about on multiple levels. Firstly; Asgardia's goal isn't specifically to populate space with its own citizens but to make space accessible by all people and to see humanity as a single people in that respect. It aims to make space peaceful and separate it from the conflicts on earth.

"Asgardia is also unique from a philosophical aspect – to serve entire humanity and each and everyone, regardless of his or her personal welfare and the prosperity of the country where they happened to be born."

I think that the vision that Asgardia is moving to create a utopian society and populate it with its own people so the number of women from this perspective doesn't specifically apply.

Further to that, I don't think that it's unusual to see more interest from men than women in this sort of area. It's very reminiscent of the STEM -- This project is about Science, Engineering, Technology -- an area that women, classically at least, are under-represented in.

I think that once the community starts to be more widely accepted as something more than theoretical, the population will start to further diversify.

And when the prospect of actually going to space is on the table, I'm certain that will be of interest to everyone, regardless of their gender.

Add to that the fact that some of our highest-ranking members are females, I can rest secure in the fact that women have strong representation.

To answer your question directly: 15% of 100,000 is 15,000 people, the number of people required to repopulate is 160. 15,000 : 85:000 would provide more than enough bio-diversity to create a successful population. But I don't think that it will come down to that.”

What was printed:
“As for the worrying dearth of women, he said: “When the prospect of actually going to space is on the table, I'm certain that will be of interest to everyone, regardless of their gender”. In any case, 15 per cent would provide “more than enough biodiversity to create a successful population” ”

So, you can see here that a large section of my actual response was cut out in order to present a friendly ‘bite’ of my overall point and moreover, most of the questions I answered only served to provide some context, or were cut entirely. Now, that is perhaps part of the ‘art form’ of the author of an article when space is limited.

But it definitely raises the question: What can Asgardia do to control the narrative about the project and help others to understand, with more depth, what Asgardia is about without diluting the message.

How will we pay for Asgardia?

Tax is used to help provide funding for a range of public services such as education, welfare, health-care, roads, railways, public-transport, housing, public projects and it really is the life-blood of a country and there have been a lot of conversations recently about how Asgardia will pay for all its services.

I am a man of the modern world and I am no stranger to the modern way of doing things and so it will come as no surprise to those like me, that I have experience in crowdfunding.

Crowdfunding is the collective effort of a large group of often unconnected individuals who come together and pool small amounts of money to invest in something.

Crowdfunding works by creating a central point for a very decentralized network of people and is the exemplar of “Strength in numbers.” It works because a vast group of people spread out all across the world have a common interest and come together to support that interest.

A good example of this is Kickstarter which is a Crowdfunding website where people can raise projects or business start-ups and appeal for money from the crowd. Kickstarter has raised 3.2billion dollars and has funded over 130,000 projects.

So intrinsically, the concept of Crowdfunding shares a lot of sentiment with the philosophy of Asgardia. A group of people coming together regardless of borders to reach a common goal. Great. And it’s not just the sentiment that works, either. Crowdfunding is becoming a massive industry.

According to Massolution (via http://crowdexpert.com/ ) the total funding volume has more doubled each year to a massive $34.4 billion dollars in 2015. A large sum of that money includes P2P financing, but even without that the total is still over 10 billion dollars and it shows that the money is there.

So there is money in Crowdfunding and it seems like it might be a viable way to fund some important government services, potentially get some money together to fund start-ups or inject some life into a field of research. But is it enough to run a country?

In terms of population, Asgardia is close in number to Iceland which has a population of around 332,000 – it’s an impressive economy and in 2007 it was the 7 ^th most productive country in the world so it’s a good example of an economy of a similar population.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the usual method used to measure a country’s economy. GDP is the total value of everything produced by all the people and businesses in the country. In 2017 Iceland’s GDP was $18 billion dollars which gives them a GDP per capita of $52,500.

According to OECD in 2015 the total tax revenue for Iceland was 6.1billion dollars – as it currently stands, this would mean that each member of Asgardians would need to contribute a whopping average of $20,500 per year through crowd funding to match Iceland’s tax revenue.

Of course, it’s easy to poke holes in that logic, we don’t have any public transport, we don’t have to pay for health care, we don’t need to pay for sanitation or for refuse and so Asgardia in its current form is going to need a lot less money to be operational and fund things, but it certainly gets the point across.

So it’s clear that funding the entire country through crowdfunding is going to be a challenge, but we can we afford through crowdfunding?

Rockets

According to space.com NASA’s new rockets, scheduled for 2023 will cost around 500 million per launch. With a population of 300,000 this would mean that we’d need an average donation of $1,666 per person and we’d be able to afford to launch our own rocket into space! (Assuming NASA would let us borrow one.)

Research

Even with modest Crowdfunding, we’d be able to give a financial boost to a lot of ongoing research initiatives, or even fund our own research to help further our goals and develop marketable space technologies.

Business

Funding start-up companies through the use of crowdfunding would be another great return for Asgardia. By creating businesses that are successful and marketable under the Asgardian banner, it would not only help our reputation as a nation, but the more money they make, the more they can put back in to Asgardia through donations and crowdfunding.

In addition to funding our own start-ups, there is also the option of seeking out other Asgardians and buying their goods and services to help build a stronger overall economic base for our citizens. The wealthier our citizens are, the more money they would have to donate towards the rise of our nation.

Infrastructure

We can invest in ownership of land around the world and start to create the infrastructure that we will need in the future. Solar energy plants, launch platforms, fuel refineries – and until we need them, we can rent them out to people or sell their produce to help increase the nation's available funds.

However the situation looks right now, a conversation about how we're going to pay for everything will definitely need to take place in the future, for now, there are plenty of things that we can be working on to start building up a financial basis for the nation.

Congratulations to all those that voted on the constitution, you’re the first ‘official’ citizens of Asgardia, not just space tourists 😊

Citizens of Asgardia have the right to receive Asgardia’s documents for free; upload their files to Asgardia-1 and future satellites without charge; nominate themselves for leadership and Parliamentary positions; work in the government and become local representatives. Citizens can bring forth petitions, including those to update the Constitution.

The ‘state’ of the nation is still very disorganized. It’s going to fall to the community members of Asgardia to start pulling together and getting organized. It’s important to know that this will be a gradual process. Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither will Asgardia be.

Community Leadership Elections

Okay. So this one is pretty important. To start getting people to work together, we need to start creating active community groups and the best way to do this is to start voting for and electing community leaders, Debutants, Strategists, Trendsetters and so on.

These people will be able to start organizing more community action, support petitions, allocate budgets, form committees and will eventually undertake fundraising activities, too (which is the principle source of funding for Asgardia.)

Parliament

Now that the constitution has been accepted, it will be important to start setting up the actual government. We’re going to need all those ministries, banks and government services to be fully operational if we’re ever going to be taken seriously as a nation.

The actual conditions and guidelines for Parliament positions are still yet to be determined and are likely to be determined after the leadership elections end in September / October (though that date might shift.)

Getting word out

Asgardia is still relatively unknown, though we have had some press success, there is still a lot more that we can do to build up a strong image of our nation. Spreading the word about Asgardia and doing what you can to build support will go a long way to helping us get more citizens in the future, and to help us be taken more seriously by other members of the international community.

Getting down to business.

Asgardia is open to start-up companies, bringing your business into Asgardia’s jurisdiction will help the economic growth of the nation. Getting to know people in your local area, making connections and sharing skills and resources would be a great way to start your business in Asgardia.

A great way to really help build up the business is to try to use the goods and services of other Asgardians, making everyone in our community more prosperous and pumping some life into our economy.

Official Documents.

Now that the constitution has been voted on, it’s possible to start thinking about official documents. ID cards will come first – these will be tied into your ‘presence’ within Asgardian and will be linked to banking and government services. It’s likely that you’ll need to travel as these documents will be picked up in person, one such office is in Vienna – but it’s likely that there will be embassies, representatives and consulates that will be set up at a later date.

This certainly isn’t an exhaustive list, there is a lot of work that needs to be done to make our nation a success. Good luck and I’ll see you out there.

What does Asgardia’s 15% mean for our future?

The first I heard about this figure was from the Wall Street Journal, and later from the Times, they maintain that only 15% of the people that voted for the constitution (which at the time had been signed by about 100,000 people.) were females, but what does that really mean to the project? Does it matter that we appear to have so few females in our ranks and what can we do to address this small number?

I think that the first thing we need to look at is why are the numbers so low?

Asgardia itself currently exists in a very unique ‘space’ – It exists pretty much on paper and in the minds of the visionaries that want to make it work. The topic of ‘Space’ immediatly puts this into the realm of ‘science fiction,’ a genre dominated by male readers and writers. So when people hear about Asgardia and it’s lofty goals, it’s easy to be put off.

The elements of Asgardia that make the news are typically things like the development of space platforms and planetary defence weapons and defending humanity from threats from outer space. These things currently only exist in the realm of science fiction.

If we look past people’s perceptions of Asgardia and focus on what it’s really about, we find at the core it’s about Science, Technology and the development and protection of humanity. Infact, in the core concept, 2 of the 3 parts that make up the project’s concept focus wholly on science and technology.(source: https://asgardia.space/en/word )

Classically, women in the STEM fields are underrepresented or have less interested in STEM disciplines than men. Only 13% of all people working in a STEM are female.

With Asgardia’s focus on science, technology and near science-fiction goals, it’s easy to see why this might not be the most attractive community for the majority of women.

However, as Asgardia expands and starts to create results and communities, the appeal of the Space Kingdom will grow and the demographic will start to increase in diversity. People will start to understand that there is a lot more to it than science and technology.

We have teachers, artists, creators, carers and people that genuinely care for the welfare of the planet. It’s a project that will appeal to a great deal of people and by the time we’re actually ready to move up and start building platforms in space, then people of all genders and backgrounds are going to be chomping at the bit to join.

So we’ve addressed why the population of women is so low. But why does a low population of female asgardians cause problems for us?

Firstly people seem to have this notion that Asgardians are a group of people that simply want to rise up and colonise space. I was recently interviewed for an article that is set to appear in The Times (UK) and the question I was asked was:

Wouldn’t that be a problem if there was a colony in space with only 15% women?

My first response to this question was that at the core of our concept , we want space to be accessible by everyone, regardless of their geographic location, wealth or religion.

We’re not looking to assemble and all just abandon earth and head for the stars and start to compete with ‘humanity’. We want to be an independent nation of Earthlings that gradually expand our territories into space. Article 5 of the constitution on Territory outlines our plans of expansion and it clearly mentions having territories on earth, earth orbit and celestial bodies.

The intermingling between people of all genetic backgrounds will still be intrinsically possible, regardless of what Asgardia’s current digital population. So it’s a moot question.

But, let’s just consider the question — would a population of 15% of 100,000 people be a problem for a space colony?

According to some some calculations a population of 20 generations could be maintained with as little as 80 – 160 people while others suggest a population of 10,000 – 40,000 people would maintain nearly 100% generic diversity.

15% of our 100,000 constitution adopters is 15,000 people – and if we consider that Asgardia has 300,000~ members in total, 15% of that would represent 45,000 females which is more than enough to completely repopulate the human race.

So looking at the question from multiple angles, we can see that the 15% female population doesn’t really represent a problem to Asgardia – but there are definitely some areas that we should keep in mind.

with only 15% of the population that signed the constitution female, it means that there is a danger that women will be poorly represented by the nation and that the needs of women in general might go unheard.

There are issue that might not be addressed — such as women’s rights, equality, government subsidised sanitary products, abortions and specialist health care.

We’re fortunate that some of the top members of our administration and community are women such as Lena De Winne and Rebekah Berg. This shows that Asgardia is serious about being a progressive nation and making sure that women have strong representation.

Asgardia Virtual Reality Code. What does it all have in common? Well – the simple answer to that is “Me.”

This blog is a place for me to talk about the various efforts that I am taking in my life to pursue various passions of mine which I will outline later in the article, but in a brief executive summary – I am fascinated by the potential applications of virtual reality and the impact that it could have. I am studying to be a software engineer and finally, I’m a member of Asgardia, the first space nation and I seek to help develop this community and bring my growing technical knowledge along for the ride.

In this blog, I’ll be sharing my findings, projects and writing about anything that I find particularly pertinent to the topic.

A lot of things out there worth taking a look at, don’t you think?

Now, I imagine that most of you have heard about coding and virtual reality, but I’ll bet that far less of you have heard about Asgardia , so it’s probably a good idea to start by talking about the first Space Nation. Asgardia is an incredibly ambitious project founded by eminent Russian scientist, Dr. Igor Ashurbeyli. Over the course of the blog, I will be going into a lot more detail on this, but in brief it's a project that aims to build a community of people up around three principle ideals.

1. Philosophical
2. Legal
3. Scientific / Technological

Philosophical
Simply put, the philosophy behind the project’s concept is that Asgardia will serve all humanity, regardless of ‘earthly divides’ such as race, geographic location or religion. Asgardia seeks to become a fully independent nation with all that entails, including membership to the United Nations, a government and foreign embassies.

Legal
Asgardia seeks to be instrumental in the creation of a new legal platform ‘Universal Space Law’ that deals with exploration of near earth and deep space. Today, only about 20 of the 200 nations on earth have any form of space presence and have plans to explore, mine and claim exclusive rights in space. Asgardia seeks to be a force that will help protect individuals and countries from the threats of space, and to help ensure they too can benefit from the bounties that space has to offer.

Scientific / Technological
Asgardia seeks to use Science and Technology to provide solutions to three core goals. Peace, Access and Protection. Asgardia seeks to really rally the scientific community from all nations, especially those that don’t have access to space, to ensure that they can benefit from a truly demilitarised and central base of knowledge in space. Now trust me, I know that it is a lot to take in, but at the core this community wants to help humanity to become a border-less space-faring people. What’s not to like about that?

So now that we’ve discussed the basics of the space nation, let me tell you a little bit about me. My name is Ross and I’m currently studying Software Engineering at Southampton Solent University and my goal is to learn to use code and computers to solve various problems that people might have. Presently, I am a second-year student, so I have a lot to learn and if you follow this blog, you’ll get to see my progress as I evolve and create new and amazing solutions to some of Asgardia’s problems.

As we look to the stars, there are a lot of issues that we will need to address, especially if we want to create robotic defence platforms that are powered by AI.

A Virtual Space for Asgardia won't be the only space we have.

Virtual Reality recently had it’s ‘year one’ in 2016. Sure it’s been around for decades, but 2016 was the year that people really started to take it seriously.

Facebook decided to wade in and fork out $3billion and that’s when people said “Okay, Virtual Reality is go!” I’ve always had a fascination with Virtual Reality, especially having read books such as “Ready Player One.” and growing up watching Star Trek and just imagining all the possibilities of a ‘holo-deck’ but it wasn’t until I started researching virtual reality for a project at university that I really opened my eyes to some of the real applications of the technology.

I’m hoping that I’ll be able to use this Virtual Reality to help communities all over the world come together and remove those borders. To provide a place where people can meet up, share ideas, learn, train and generally socialise.

This technology seems perfect for Asgardia and I will be writing about it at length. So that about covers the introduction to this blog if it seems like it might cover anything you’re interested in, why not consider subscribing or following the Facebook group.

I just read the article from the wall street journal, it was well written and brutally honest about some of the issues that we're currently facing in Asgardia. Problems that are going to hamper our development if we can't sort them out -- one point that keeps getting brought up again and again is the fact that we're struggling to organise ourselves.

It's easy to have a knee-jerk reaction to articles that criticise something that we're all so passionate about and to reject them as ignorant of the good that Asgardia is capable of doing, but we definitely need to raise to meet the challenge. Just because we have problems, certainly doesn't mean that we can't continue to be positive and polish Asgardia until it mirrors our expectations.

I would strongly encourage people to start to come together and start working as groups of people and to tackle some of these issues that we can tackle by ourselves by operating as a unified community of humans. One of the best ways that you can do this is find a candidate that resonates with you and give them your support.

The Candidates are for community leader positions and all they want to do is help bring community actions about.

It might look like something out of a Science Fiction movie, but this is actually a functional space-suit developed for SpaceX. It's likely that if we do venture into space any time soon, we'll be wearing something similar. Better get those cool Asgardian emblem arm patches ready. :)

An interesting morning this morning -- I've been going about my business recently, working on my understanding of Virtual Reality and studying not only its applications and how they can benefit us, but also learning how to create virtual worlds using unity game engine.

However, shortly after my morning coffee I was contacted by a reporter from the Wall Street Journal with a request to interview on some questions regarding my campaign and some general questions about Asgardia.

It's incredibly heartening that even a journal as respected as the Wall Street Journal is taking the matters of Asgardia seriously - Or at least with enough curiosity to interview a prospective candidate.

I am just a person.

Not a big deal.

And I do not put myself above anyone.

All I want, is to be able to listen to people and search for the answers. And maybe, if there is a true answer to be found, give it to people.

True answer, not propaganda.

Many will say, that the truth depends on the point of view. I tend to see those different points of view most of the times, and usually can explain those to others. I have a skill of maintaining 'status quo' between opposing sides of discussion.

I do not care about any religion s, same as I don't care what stories you tell your children when you put them to bed. Stories are just stories, how you act is what matters.

I am an immigrant.  Left my country some time ago, and I will never go back there permanently. English is my second language and I kinda try to excuse myself here for any spelling mistakes I've made so far.

As I said before, I am only a simple person.

I am citizen of the world, and now, citizen of the space also.

I am probably not a typical leader, but if you would like an ambassador who listen to people concerns and discuss those, trying to find the solution,

here I am.

When I was a younger lad I sat up one night with my little sister and watched the live stream of Mars Curiosity being shot towards our favourite red planet, I dreamed of being there and colonizing a new planet. To date I've signed up to every mission to Mars, sooner or later it is bound to happen for me. My question is will there be an Asgardian outpost on Mars? I'm sure at least a few others among us will be in my boat, and if not, will we still have citizenship even if we go out of contact from earth for a while?

Bir Tawil is a small triangle of land that is neither claimed by Egypt to the north or Sudan to the east. Many people have single handedly attempted to plant a flag in these lands and claim themselves a micronation, with high levels of failure. Without real funding the area looks like it will be uninhabited forever.

Well...?

Do we not plan to live in the vacume of space? Can we not claim this area as the first nation of Asgardia and base of operations until the days comes when we can remove our earthly shackles?

Who am I?

I am Ross Cheeseright, I am 33 years old. I run a Digital Marketing business and I am studying Software Engineering at Southampton Solent University. I have spent years working with data as an analyst and following redundancy, I decided to follow an education in an area that I'm passion about.

What's my angle?

I believe that Virtual Reality holds a place in our future. As I study my software engineering degree, I am learning about Virtual Reality and its applications and I would love to be involved in bringing these technological advances to Asgardia. I have recently written a paper for my degree on the benefits of Virtual Reality and I believe that it could give Asgardia a huge advantage.

What benefits can it bring us?

For the formative years of Asgardia's development, it's going to be a challenge to actually occupy 'space'. We do not yet have the funds to establish ourselves. We can't build Ark's yet and we're not able to take up land that's all claimed on the globe. Virtual Reality can help solve a lot of challenges.

1. Virtual Reality can give us a place to congregate. Through the creation of 'virtual worlds' in 'virtual space' we'll be able to feel more united. It would give us a forum to meet up 'in person' and discuss new ideas of have 'round table' meetings.
2. Virtual Reality can give us a place to train, share ideas, educate our peers and get ready for a life in space. Through the use of simulations, social interactions or even virtual schools, we can work towards learning and sharing our knowledge. Even universities like the open university are investing in this technology.
3. Space is empty! Right now, there is nothing in space. having virtual reality, haptic suits, omni-directional treadmills and so on will provide lots of entertainment for our first space-farers.

Why vote for me?

I am on the forefront of this technology. I am studying Software Engineering and achieving top grades in my programming degrees. I have a passion for Virtual Reality and I feel that I should, at the very least, be involved in strategy and implementation of Virtual reality for our Space Nation.

I can pledge my time and to share all my knowledge as well as actively develop virtual reality programs, virtual spaces and virtual reality applications for the nation of Asgardia.

I will work collaboratively with other elected members, strategists, trendsetters and so on to ensure that our nation has what it needs to be a competitive entity.

My qualifications and unique experiences means I have a deeper understanding and appreciation of those that suffer from ill health, disability and a disadvantaged background, both socially and financially. My countries political turmoil gives me a good understanding and perspective of what happens when Government forces policies that seek to further the interests of the Government to the expense and detriment of the people. I have experienced what happens when a Government spreads a policy of hate and entitlement and seeks to demonise and degrade those that are financially, educationally, socially and physically disadvantaged. A Government which seeks to serve itself and it's own interest and not those of the people is no Government at all.
