Unity of Effort through Diversity of Human Condition
By John Fine
As an Asgardian I have made a vow to make an effort to promote Unity. As I read comments within the Asgardia’s website, Discord, Slack, and Facebook, I still see the lack of effort in unity among Asgardians. Not all Asgardians mind you, but some, and as we are all unified into one, “this some” is our weak link in the chain that can cause disaster for us all. First we must understand what
Unity of effort
really means, and what diversity of the
human condition
means as well.
Unity of effort: Is the state of harmonizing efforts among multiple organizations working towards a similar objective. This prevents organizations from working at cross purposes and it reduces duplication of effort. Multiple organizations can achieve unity of effort through shared common objectives.
Human condition: The human condition is defined as "the characteristics, key events, and situations which compose the essentials of human existence, such as birth, growth, emotionality, aspiration, conflict, and mortality."
Next we need to find a way to
harmonize our efforts
towards unity, while recognizing the human condition. I believe there are three areas that everyone can adopt that will assist in this effort. They are: Multiple Realities, Scientific Method and Reasonable Understanding.
Multiple Realities

On Multiple Realities

In a famous chapter of his Principles of Psychology William James analyzes our sense of reality.
[1]
Reality, so he states, means simply relation to our emotional and active life. The origin of all reality is
subjective
, whatever excites and stimulates our interest is real. To call a thing real means that this thing stands in a certain relation to ourselves. “The word ‘real’ is, in short, a fringe."
[2]
Our primitive impulse is to affirm immediately the reality of all that is conceived, as long as it remains uncontradicted. But there are several, probably an infinite number of various orders of realities, each with its own special and separate style of existence. James calls them “sub-universes” and mentions as examples the world of sense or physical things (as the paramount reality); the world of science; the world of ideal relations; the world of “idols of the tribe”; the various supernatural worlds of mythology and religion; the various worlds of individual opinion; the worlds of sheer madness and vagary.
[3]
The popular mind conceives of all these sub-worlds more or less disconnectedly; and when dealing with one of them forgets for the time being its relations to the rest. But every object we think of is at last referred to one of these sub-worlds. “Each world whilst it is attended to is real after its own fashion; only the reality lapses with the attention."
[4]
With these remarks James’ genius has touched on one of the most important philosophical questions. Intentionally restricting his inquiry to the psychological aspect of the problem he has refrained from embarking upon an investigation of the many implications involved. The following considerations, fragmentary as they are, attempt to outline a first approach to some of them with the special aim of clarifying the relationship between the reality of the world of daily life and that of theoretical, scientific contemplation.
Scientific Method
: The scientific method is a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. To be termed scientific, a method of inquiry is commonly based on empirical or measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning.
And Reasonable Understanding:
Today,
logical reasoning
is the umbrella term for at least three different types of reasoning. These are known as
deductive reasoning
,
inductive reasoning
and
abductive reasoning
and are based on deduction, induction and abduction, respectively. However, we have many forms of reasoning and the understanding of these forms. Logical reasoning keeps us centered on provable results rather than false assumptions and conjecture.
Realities at best are
subjective
, people see what the want to see, hear what they want to hear, and do what they want to do. Three people can look at a situation, and all three will come up with a different reality. This is a flaw in the human condition that can be corrected by believing in multiple realities. In other words, instead of being steadfast in what you think reality is, accept that others may have a different reality to yours, and that both are ok, and that you can find common ground where both can exist in harmony. This is the beauty of multiple realities theory, it acknowledges diversity and allows unity through that diversity.
The scientific method is a way to look at a situation where there are no absolutes; not at first. You question everything, you use real data to prove results, you use real world test and procedures to gain those results, you share with others and allow them to do the same, then you compare notes and come up with a reasonable hypothesis as to what the truth is. For instance, say someone says all cats are bad. This statement may be true or may not be true, so you gather information from different parts of the world on the nature of cats, real time information, your friends also gather information as well, then you compare notes. You find around 20% of cats hurt their owners, trash their owners house, or attack the children, you consider these things to be bad, so 20% of cats are bad, and 80% are not. Therefor; the statement “All cats are bad” would be false. But you did not assume this answer, you did not guess, you did not give a unsubstantiated opinion. You used verifiable proof, science, facts, and mathematical precision to prove your case. This is the beauty of the scientific method, it allows diversity of thought to be proven with sound judgment and proven results. Creating unity through provable science.
Finally, reasoned understanding. Basically this is common sense thinking, taken everything into account and saying, hey thats this or that. Being logical about a situation rather than going off on some wild goose chase. (
paranoid delusional conspiracy theories
) Say for instance you are talking to a friend, you tell this friend information, and tell them not to tell anyone. Yet somehow at the end of the week, this information is known by others. The only information that gets out is the information this one particular friend is told. Logic says this friend is the reason everyone found out the information. You can’t really say they told anyone, you can’t really prove it, and you can’t really know unless you catch them in the act. But, you can use reasonable understanding and say it is most likely them. You could go off a wild goose chase and say aliens are recording your conversations, or there are FBI agents spying on you, or someone planted a recording device in all the places you and this other person had been. Yes, those sound more exciting, but most likely are not true. Reasonable understanding says the most likely cause is the friend you thought you could trust. Let's say someone says, “The world is the worst it's ever been, and the end times are near”; a phrase we hear a lot these days. Well, reasonable understanding says this phrase is simply not true, and it can be proven using the scientific method. Why? Because we have a recorded history that says otherwise; on many occasions the world has been a lot worse throughout history. Today's situations are mild compared to some of those situations. This is the beauty of reasonable understanding it allows a commonsense approach to diversity of understanding so that you have a unified thought process that most likely is the truth.
Well that's it, I hope this has helped “the some” become closer to unity. I call this the “No Bull” approach, or no nonsense approach. It has always worked well for me, so I thought I would share. In any case, we need to strengthen our unity within Asgardia, be more understanding of others, quit seeing conspiracy theories behind every closed door, quit bringing up old battles of the world and trying to solve them within Asgardia, quit having discussions about things that really don’t matter and have no real solutions, quit trying to prove ourselves right, quit believing that we are better than someone else or smarter and more intelligent or more qualified (we are all equal), have an understanding of others beliefs and customs, try to see it from others’ points of view, find common ground, believe we have enough within ourselves to put our old superstitions aside for the betterment of Asgardia, and quit trying to distrust everything and realize we may just actually want to make this thing happen. This will move humanity into a new era that is free of the conflicts of this world we currently live in.
Thank you and sincerely all my love and kindness,
