Vision for Humanity's future: Earth becoming a residential planet

Greetings fellow Asgardians of the engineering sub-forum,

TV celebrity and English physicist Brian Cox recently announced his take, on a solution to Australia's energy crisis. He claims that simply cutting back on electricity usage in households is not enough, and neither is the commissions for extra power plants to be constructed. Cox goes on to say that “There’s enough metal, metals, in the asteroid belt to build a skyscraper 8000 stories tall and cover the earth in it... Essentially, an unlimited amount of resources [sit] there in the asteroids." To expand our reach beyond the confines of our own planet and into celestial bodies within our Solar System, and become a "multi-planetary civilisation" we will need to shift our focus from just staying a single planet into a focus on a perspective that involves everything within our Solar System.

Do you think we should focus our technology on making asteroids and moons factories for production and manufacture, thus relieving Earth of the polluting by-products created through our current factories?

I think so.

What kind of resources can be taken from asteroids? I think - at the time - not enough to completely satisfy human needs.

Greetings Fabrizio,

There are many possible resources to be mined from asteroids such as: gold, iron and nickel, even water. If we moved the polluting production facilities from Earth to asteroids, we can have easier access to the resources on the asteroids themselves while also stopping heavy polluting factories from affecting the environment of our planet negatively.

Also there are an estimated 1.9 million asteroid larger than 1 kilometer in the Solar System's main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. More than enough to build up Earth to be a residential planet and other future space colonies as well. We have the technology to do this already, we just need the funding, interest from the people and innovation to make it happen!
